A good account manager can be invaluable to any business. They often act as a bridge between the employer and the customer/client. It’s a role that allows you to build long-term business relationships and handle any queries or complaints about the account. You will typically communicate over the phone or by email, but you may also be asked to attend face-to-face meetings with a client on rare occasions.

Sometimes if you’re working in a specific industry it may help your application if you have a degree or experience in another role within that industry. Previous experience in customer service or sales will also provide many transferable skills that can help in your application for account manager jobs. You can take account management courses to help you refine your skill set from another customer service based role. Some other account manager skills that you will need to excel in the position are:

Account managers can work at any company that requires customers or clients to hold an account with them. It could be in banking, marketing, or gambling for example. The role will vary slightly depending on where you do end up working. However, as long as you can build strong customer relationships and be a reliable point of contact then you will be a strong candidate for account manager roles in the UK.

What are the career prospects of an Account Manager?

Being an account manager is a really exciting opportunity for a number of reasons. The first being it adds a management title to your CV. This instantly shows that you’ve been given a big responsibility, and all you have to do is prove that you can perform successfully in the role. Typically the salary can be low when you’re first starting out. But with only a couple of years experience account managers can earn around £25,000 a year.

After becoming an account manager, the next step could be sideways, into a sales based role. You might prefer to deal with new customers rather than retaining old ones. If you wish to move up within account management you could become a senior account manager. This would see you taking on the companies biggest and highest paying clients. You could promote yourself even further into a role such as head of client services. Which could come with a wage anywhere between £30,000-£70,000 depending on the size and industry you work in.
