A motor mechanic inspects, diagnoses, repairs, and maintains automotive vehicles. Motor mechanics need to talk to their customers about their vehicle’s problems, find and diagnose faults. Their expertise covers everything from engines, electrics, and exhausts, to air conditioning and alarm systems. They may also be involved in renovating, restoring, and refurbishing old vehicles.

What does a Motor Mechanic do?

Motor mechanics usually work in garages and repair centres. They work for large multinational chains or for privately run smaller businesses. Although specific responsibilities vary from business to business, typical duties could include:

  • talking to customers about their vehicle’s problems
  • assessing vehicles and diagnosing mechanical faults
  • diagnosing faults using hand tools or a computer
  • advising customers on what repairs are needed
  • estimating time and costs for jobs
  • replacing parts and repairing systems
  • customising and upgrading vehicles
  • road testing vehicles and performing MOTs
  • carrying out scheduled servicing and maintenance
  • checking stock levels and parts

What qualifications do you need to be a Motor Mechanic?

You won’t necessarily need a degree in order to become a motor mechanic. The most common route is to become a trainee or apprentice, which will give you on-the-job training and help you to build your experience and expertise at the same time. There are two ways to become a motor mechanic, either by taking a course or through an apprenticeship. 

There are many courses available on how to become a car mechanic as well as college diplomas. However, to take this route you’ll have to be 100% committed to your studies and have enough time to devote. Once you get certified on the subject, you can move on to get a head start in the job.

Moreover, you can enter this profession and the automotive industry by taking an apprenticeship. After all, it’s always best to learn things on the field and get hands-on experience. You can get working knowledge by working under a mentor in a garage. You can complete an intermediate or advanced apprenticeship as a motor vehicle service and maintenance technician. This will usually take 2 to 3 years. You’ll do on-the-job training and spend time at a college or training provider.

To become a motor mechanic, you should have the ability to repair, maintain & use machines and tools. Moreover, it’s important to pay attention and be thorough in all necessary details and use your own initiative. Analytical thinking, movement, coordination, agility, and good communication skills will be an advantage. Finally, having the ability to work in a team with other team members as well as perseverance and willpower are also essential in order to work in this profession.

Your earning capacity will vary depending on your experience, knowledge, and qualifications. For example, salaries for Motor Mechanic professionals start from £18,000. For experienced individuals salaries can reach up to £40,000. After gaining experience, you’ll be able to advance in your career, moving into higher positions and higher salary ranges. Such career path options could be, for instance,  becoming a senior technician, a garage manager or a workshop supervisor.
