Tips to host a Covid friendly company Christmas party

Published: Thursday 10th December 2020

Following the pandemic, this “New Normal” era has made the Christmas office party look a lot different, just like everything else. As a result, employers are finding themselves caught in between the need to adapt to current guidelines and keeping everyone safe during this festive season. But no matter what 2020 has brought, Christmas is all about love, family, friends and celebrating. That’s why we’ve pulled together some top tips to help you host a Covid friendly company Christmas party that will cheer up everyone in your team!

Abide by regulations for a Covid friendly company Christmas party

If you’re planning to celebrate Christmas at work with an office party then make sure you abide by the current Tier regulations and guidelines. Of course, the ever-changing guidelines make it a bit of a challenge but it’s vitally important to be well informed when beginning to think about your work party ideas. That way you’ll be in line with the current laws and avoid risking a hefty fine.

In addition, you may have to rethink the usual party props and replace them with hand sanitiser and anti-bacterial wipes. They may be far from the norm but don’t forget to plan them into your festive gathering. This will ensure that you take all the necessary precautions for a safe office environment. Although not ideal, it’d be good to keep in mind that restrictions may become stricter. So, have a backup plan to save the day! A virtual party is always a good alternative to overcome lockdown rules and still get together with your team and colleagues.

Make it a social-distancing friendly work Christmas party

One of the most important things to consider when planning a Covid friendly company Christmas party is how many people can legally gather together in a closed space. So, think of the magic number that applies to your area! For example, if your office is working from home then the rule of six is likely to apply when it comes to your office Christmas party. In that case, you can still throw a party but simply in smaller teams. Think of having a separate gathering for each department in your company or even virtually.

As it stands, the 10 pm curfew also applies to private gatherings and is another factor to take into consideration for your work party ideas. If your team is unable to work from home then the office could be the best option for your venue. This will make it easier for your employees to attend but also feel safer.

Set the date

Set the date for your Christmas office party with plenty of notice. This will allow you to plan ahead and get the best private caterers. Most importantly, your employees will have time to think about it and plan ahead if they need to make any changes in order to attend. Perhaps kicking the party off during daytime hours would be a lot better especially with the 10pm curfew.

Plan for food and ask about dietary requirements

Make sure you consider all of your guests when planning for your office Christmas party. Ensure whether you need to cater for any allergies or particular dietary requirements. If opting for a private catering then you’ll have to make them aware of any requests too.

Choose a theme for your Covid friendly company Christmas party

Amongst our social-distancing friendly work Christmas party ideas, picking a theme is a brilliant place to start with. Whether it’s traditional tacky, chic or based on your work industry, it’s a great way to bring something different to your Christmas office party and help cheer your employees up. It will certainly feel a lot more special than the usual after-work drinks while you can also think of giving away a prize for the best employee outfit!

Plan some games

Office Christmas party games can be a great way to break the ice if you’re bringing together colleagues that may not know each other or who work remotely. Party games will help you make sure that the business chat is left in the office and people are able to relax, let their hair down and enjoy themselves!

You can always go virtual!

If your usual Christmas get together is not possible this year due to local lockdowns and restrictions, then a virtual gathering can be equally as fun! Plan for sending personal packages with booze and food. That way everyone will still be able to enjoy the party together from the comfort of their own homes. Moreover, there are also plenty of activities employees can take part in collectively through the power of zoom! From festive quizzes and wine and cheese tasting, people have had to adapt to the new way in which we now do gatherings.

Most importantly, don’t forget that coronavirus doesn’t mean your office Christmas party has to be abandoned this year. Celebrating Christmas at work is still an option as long as you host a Covid friendly company Christmas party! Whatever you decide to do, you can still have a party to celebrate and recognise all of the hard work your employees have done during what has truly been a tough and challenging year.
