How to attract the best candidates in 2017

Published: Friday 27th January 2017

Best candidates written on a diagram

The new year is upon us and historically now is the time most people want to look for a new job. It was reported that almost eight million British employees vow to leave their job in 2016 but this trend is nothing new.

Early January is typically when the largest mass of candidates are expected to start their search. In 2013, Monday 7th January was dubbed National Job Hunt Day as an estimated 11.84 million people began to search for a new job and in 2014 Monday 6th was dubbed Massive Monday by recruiters.
So how can recruiters stay ahead of the game and get the best candidates?

Re-evaluate
Was your recruitment drive in 2016 successful? Look at what worked and what didn’t, this way you have a good basis to start from. If you have lots of candidates but not enough roles or vice versa, maybe look at an advertising campaign? There will be plenty of competition, all trying to get the attention of potential candidates, so this may require you to think outside the box and change your normal recruitment tactics.

Network
Use contacts from new and existing clients and inform them of the amount of candidates you have ready and waiting for a new opportunity. If you have a lot of candidates reach out to your clients and check if they are hiring to get your foot in the door first. As well as this, use social media tools like Twitter and LinkedIn to not only find new candidates but clients as well.

Keep candidates warm
The candidates may be flooding in but are the clients? With a bigger talent pool to choose from some companies may take longer to make a decision so keeping your candidates informed at every stage is a sure way to keep them on board. Offer your candidates advice and guidance to build your relationship. If you can’t help them now, but have given a good candidate experience, they may come back in the future when they need their next career move.

Use recruitment tools
Go where the candidates are, use job boards and apps to be directly connected to candidates. In 2014 90% of jobseekers said they were planning on using their mobile device to look for a new job – in 2017 that stat must be near to 100%!
