High-paid job opportunities growing

Published: Tuesday 26th January 2021

A recent report by the Institute for Employment Studies reveals high-paid job opportunities are growing. The study suggested low-paid workers are twice as likely to lose their job during the pandemic than high-paid workers. The study also estimates 1 in 20 low-paid workers have stopped working during the pandemic. This is in stark contrast to just 1 in 50 for those on higher wages. Low pay jobs were classed as those paying less than £9.50p/h or £10.85p/h in London.

The institute estimates 4 million low-paid workers have been away from work, furloughed or had their hours cut. This is approximately two-thirds of the UK’s entire low-wage population. Low-paid sectors such as hospitality, retail and food services have been badly hit by the lockdown. However, high-paying job opportunities are increasing in the public, technology and finance sectors in cities like London. The report ends with a bleak picture for post-covid-19 Britain. It predicts unemployment will double to pre-pandemic levels, with around 2.6 million people out of work.

Public sector high-paid job opportunities

Continued uncertainty is affecting the UK job market. Some sectors have seen job openings dry up completely. However, others are seeing a rise in demand for skilled workers.
