Animal Jobs in London

Published: Wednesday 10th June 2015

Swan on a lake

London is a great place to work, not only because of the sheer amount of jobs that are available in the capital, but also because of the amazing diversity of careers. Even in a landscape as urban as London it is still possible to work in or with nature, for instance.

We have listed some of the most exciting, and in some cases rather bizarre, London jobs for those of you who would like to work with animals.

Lion cage cleaner at London Zoo

Before Sylvester Stallone became an international movie star, he worked as a lion cage cleaner in New York City’s Central Park. If you like getting your hands dirty, and are rather brave by nature, this could be the job for you.

This is another name for a Yeomen Warder; somebody who works as a ceremonial guardian of the Tower of London. Traditionally, the warders are responsible for looking after the prisoners in the Tower and safeguarding the British crown jewels. These days, they have a much more ceremonial purpose, acting as tour guides and being tourist attractions in their own right. The ‘Ravenmaster’ is one of the Yeomen Warders who has the responsibility to maintain the welfare of the ravens of the Tower of London. To apply, you need at least 22 years’ military service with an honourable record.

Marker of the Swans

The Queen still owns all of the country’s swans by law. The Queen’s Marker of the Swans has many swan-related duties. First of all, he advises organisations throughout the United Kingdom about swan welfare. He also monitors the health of the local swan population and works with swan rescue organisations if needed. He is in charge of the rescue of sick and injured swans and co-ordinates the animals when there are rowing competitions on the Thames. The Queen’s Swan Marker still organises the annual event of Swan Upping on the River Thames too. The position is currently filled.

Dog yoga teacher

Now that yoga is part of every Londoner’s daily routine, dog yoga can offer a refreshing change. Not only is it a healthy way to start the day for human beings, but it’s also a good bonding exercise between dogs and their owners. As a dog yoga teacher, you get to spend your days among some very zen quadrupeds.

Animal walking tour guide

Despite London currently ranking 23rd on the list of the world’s largest cities, there is plenty of wildlife and nature to be found within the city borders. As an animal walking tour guide, you get to share the stories of animals in the city. Many of the tours that are currently being offered explore the relationship and attitudes towards animals in Victorian London, which led to it becoming the birthplace for many of the world’s biggest animal organisations and campaigns.
