Best Practice In Your New Job

So you did it, you trumped all the competition to successfully secure the job – congratulations! A new job brings the opportunity to reinvent yourself in a new environment, meet like-minded people and establish new connections in the world of work. With this significant change, it is natural to feel a mixture of both nerves and excitement.

Zoek has compiled our advice on how you can channel this energy and ‘back to school feeling’ into a positive impression in your new job. To help you hit the ground running, we have put together ten top tips for best practice in the workplace:

Behave Professionally for your new Job

Whilst acting appropriately may seem obvious, it is hugely important to adapt your language, attitude and personality in order to fit in your new working environment. It may be that the human Jägermeister train you and your friends did at the weekend was no mean feat; an achievement by any stretch of the imagination, but your colleagues may not wish to have every single detail recalled.
Alongside verbal communication, basic body language cues; such as standing up straight, a firm handshake and eye contact with people suggest a positive, confident attitude and are easy tactics to adopt in your working life. Eyes, as they say, are ‘windows to the soul’, so make sure you hold a comfortable and steady gaze when speaking to your colleagues. Don’t overdo it though; you don’t want to become known as ‘the chick in Accounts that doesn’t blink’.

Dress Professionally

So you have no issues acting professionally, but recently you’ve become accustomed to channelling your inner Rita Ora. Think again! It is not just about acting and thinking professionally; you also need to look the part. The way you dress should be in line with your work environment. If you’re working in an office, for an example, you should wear smart business dress. That thigh-skimming LBD might look great for a night on the town, but is totally inappropriate for the workplace and won’t impress your boss or your colleagues any time soon. For the guys, you can’t go wrong with a smart suit; in the world of work it is always better to be too smart than too casual. Once you have settled into your new role, speak to your colleagues or line manager about what is and is not acceptable attire for the office.

Listen and Talk

Communication is a two-way street. Whilst your colleagues will want to hear about you, your likes and dislikes, professional opinion and experience, try to resist launching into your life story at every given opportunity. As obvious as it sounds, keep a good balance of talking and listening; let others tell you about themselves, and listen to them. Always show interest in what they are saying, and never ignore people when they ask for your help; you never know when you might need theirs.

Be Respectful To Others

Regardless of their level or status, you must respect everybody that you encounter, and talk to them with equal respect. It doesn’t matter that you do not approve of Bob in I.T’s smoking habit; keep your personal opinions to yourself. If you show respect to others, then in turn, you will gain theirs.

Work Consistently in Your New Job

Let’s say you spend 99% of the day working away furiously at your desk and 1% of the day staring into space. If your boss walks in during that brief moment, what impression do you think they will get of you and what impact will that have on your chance of progression within that company? Work at a realistic level you know you can sustain all day, and if you feel like you need a break, don’t do this at your desk, go outside and get some fresh air.

Put In That Little Bit Extra

So you start work at 9am and finish at 5pm, five days each week. Or perhaps you work four nights on and four nights off. Either way starting five minutes early or leaving ten minutes late will barely impact on your schedule, but may be noticed by your superiors looking at who is deserving of recognition, or even a promotion. Arriving early will also give you the chance to assess your day, as opposed to rushing in and starting the first task you think of. Whereas, staying late is believed to reduce work-related stress,  giving you the opportunity to clear the decks and complete those nagging tasks that you have been putting off, but not had time to complete.

Take The Initiative

When you start a new job, a great and simple way to get to know your colleagues is by getting involved with the tea round. Making tea shouldn’t be beneath any of us and people will appreciate your offer to make them a cuppa. Not only will you be showing that you’re helpful and a team player, it’s a great way to interact with your new colleagues that you’ll bump into in the kitchen. You could even ask them for a quick tour of the office whilst you’re at it.

Get Organised

If you spend your day wondering how you will fit everything in or forgetting about things you need to do, take a step back and make a plan or schedule for how you are going to complete your work. This could be in the form of a timetable, or even a list that you can tick off as you complete tasks. Not only will this ease stress, it will ensure that you don’t end up rushing projects and getting to the end of the day wondering what you have achieved.

Be Proactive

And help your work colleagues. There may be times when your work load is quieter, so rather than putting your feet up and letting work come to you, take a proactive approach and ask your colleagues if they need help with anything. Not only will this show you are willing to take on extra work, it will also mean you are perceived as a real team player; a quality which most companies love to see in their employees. Besides, it can never hurt to have a couple of people who owe you a favour can it.

Remember That You Are Not Superhuman

No matter how hard you try, you may make mistakes from time to time. If you find yourself on the receiving end of some critical comments, take this on board and make positive steps towards making sure you do not make the same mistake twice. Nobody expects you to be perfect and, if anything, your superiors will be pleased to see you learning from your mistakes.

If you can take all of the above advice on board, you will soon be on your way to fast track success in your new role. Not only will you impress your boss and colleagues, you will be setting a standard for everyone else, and getting the most out of your new role. Above all, it is important to be yourself, give it your all and work hard; in time, everything else will fall into place and you will soon become establish as a valued team member.
