Finding your dream job early in life

Published: Tuesday 22nd January 2019

According to a study of 2,000 employees by F&C Investment Trust, 85% of all employees aren’t happy in their current position. Most of these workers were looking for a better work-life balance, a less stressful work environment and, of course, better pay. That sounds like the foundation of most peoples dream job.

It’s something that will resonate with many of us throughout our working lives. Feeling fulfilled and happy in your work is one of the life goals that we all struggle for. And while many do achieve that at some stage, just as many are put off by the idea of switching jobs due to financial pressures or the thought of failure.

The same study suggests that it isn’t until our early to mid-thirties that most people finally find the role that makes them truly fulfilled. Of course, you can’t expect to secure your dream job straight out of school. Like most things in life, getting there is a journey. But there are things you can do to help you get there quicker.

Discover your passion

It helps to know what you actually want from your working life. Especially if you’re just starting out in your career. While most people know what they want to do, some discover that when they finally get round to doing it, it doesn’t suit them at all. Which is why it’s a good idea to get some work experience under your belt while you’re looking at career options.

Start by sitting down with pen and paper to brainstorm what jobs are best suited to you and what you can need to get those jobs. Ask questions such as:

  • What do you like doing
  • What action do you need to get closer to your goals?
  • How do you go about getting them?
  • What skills and qualifications do you have?
  • What are you good at?

Once this is in place, you can set about creating an action plan to help you on your way.

Never lose sight of your goals

Next research potential sources for jobs, such as Zoek. Compile a list of job sites and resources, and subscribe to email updates, even if you’re already in full-time employment. You don’t want to miss out on any opportunities just because you’re working a day job.

Employee being proactive with dominoes

Be proactive too. Find out more about the companies you want to work for. Connect with them on social media. Send them a CV and a letter letting them know that you’re interested in working with them and ask to be contacted should something come up. Not every job is advertised. You might get lucky.

At the same time, pursue professional goals, such as courses and qualifications, even if just part-time. These provide you with the tools you need for your chosen profession. They also demonstrate to employers that you’re serious about what you want to do and are prepared to put in the work to get there.

Start working towards your dream job today

Of course, some careers are more popular than others. You can expect a lot of competition if you’re looking for writer jobs, property developer jobs or to work in the media industry. To begin with, you’ll need a job that pays the bills. See this as one of the stepping stones on the way to your dream job, but never lose sight of your ultimate goal, or stop working towards it.

Ready to begin the journey to your dream job? Whether you’re looking for hotel jobs, medical jobs or any other profession, start with a job search on Zoek.
