Did you know what you wanted to do for a job when you were a child? Perhaps you’re still not totally sure. How can a job search be child’s play? Imagine a place where you can have a go at pretty well any profession to see if it’s the one for you. For today’s kids, a new entertainment centre is giving them a taste of working life and preparing them for the future whether they’ll be looking for jobs in London, Manchester or Newcastle.
Obviously, we’re not talking about real work here, this is for fun. KidZania, a Mexican chain currently operating in 16 countries throughout the world and opening in London this month, gives youngsters the chance to try their hand at different adult jobs while earning ‘money’ in the form of kidZos that can be deposited in the ‘bank’ or spent in the centre’s gift shop.
KidZania making job search a child’s play
Each KidZania is a child-sized model city complete with shops, offices and other workplaces as well as theatres and even moving ‘traffic’ on its streets. It’s a kind of theme park without the rides and has been dubbed the latest in ‘edutainment’ or educational entertainment.
It’s aimed at children aged between four and 14 who can get dressed up and learn – under instruction – how to be a dentist or a TV presenter, a fireman or a factory packer. They can spend time in the ‘town’s’ newspaper office or in its courtroom, learning how reporters or barristers earn their money. The London KidZania, at the Westfield shopping centre, will even have the use of the fuselage of a British Airways Airbus in which kids can try their hand at being a pilot or a member of the cabin crew.
Most of the activities are sponsored and branded by companies such as Coca Cola or Renault. In fact, more than 50 per cent of the initial investment in KidZania came from the corporate sector.
The world’s top family entertainment centre
KidZania was voted the world’s Top Family Entertainment Centre by the IAAPA (International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions) and 2009 Global Leisure Operator of the Year and more than 30 million guests have passed through its doors since it opened 16 years ago.
It’s a novel idea for an entertainment complex and one that not only children can benefit from. A visit with the kids could well see their parents start thinking about their own jobs, and the possibility of changing them.
