Jobseekers have known for some time that social media, such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter, can be very useful when it comes to your career, but one platform that hasn’t been associated with job searching up until now has been Instagram. However, it now looks that’s all about to change as more recruiters integrate Instagram into their social media campaigns.
The rise of Instagram as a recruitment tool
While social media platforms, such as LinkedIn, are tailor-made for jobseekers looking to showcase their professional skills and find leads, until recently, Instagram, was really only seen as a photo-sharing application. Now, according to digital marketing agency, TerminalFour, Instagram is gaining traction. Facebook’s popularity for engaging candidates fell from 62% in 2017 to 45% this year. By comparison, Instagram rose from 20% to 36%, becoming the fastest growing social media platform for student recruitment. And while this particular survey focussed on student recruitment, a study from Pew Research Center found that Facebook usage is falling among younger demographics who prefer Instagram and this is something recruiters are picking up on and adapting their campaigns accordingly.
How to use Instagram for job searching ?
If you want to start using Instagram to find jobs, you should begin by creating a dedicated account for that purpose. That means taking it easy on the selfies and no photos from ‘that’ wild weekend.
Think about how you want to market yourself, taking into account your career preferences and industry niche. This can obviously be much easier for certain careers than others. For instance, a tattoo artist will find it much easier to demonstrate their work on Instagram than an accountant. It’s up to you to be creative. If you work in a ‘non-visual’ industry, for example, it might be beneficial to focus on what you’ve achieved for your clients. Industry events or outside interests that showcase your creativity, problem-solving skills, and business acumen.
Don’t forget to use hashtags that focus on the career niches you’re interested in, as well as the organisations and even locations where you want to work. So, for example, if you’re looking jobs in Liverpool, include relevant hashtags, such as #Liverpooljobs. Likewise, make sure you get those all-important keywords recruiters to look for in your ‘bio’.
The key to success when using Instagram in your job search is to be appropriate, professional and, above all, creative. But you can have a little fun along the way. Humour, used appropriately, can be a great way to engage people. Just make sure you review your account regularly to see if anyone tags you and adjust your privacy settings accordingly.
Instagram shouldn’t be your only social media tool for job searching, but used as part of a wider strategy. Furthermore, widening your search when it comes to finding that next career move.
