Social media is a huge part of our day-to-day lives, in fact over 75% of all internet users are on social media and in November Facebook revealed that 1.5 billion people use its social networking site on a monthly basis. With this in mind, it’s no surprise that more and more employers are viewing potential employees’ social media profiles to gain an idea of their personality and assess their suitability for the role.

Whether you are on the hunt for a new job or not here’s what you should and shouldn’t be doing on your social media channels.

Facebook and Twitter

It is impossible to ignore Facebook these days, almost everyone is on it. Many people consider their Facebook profile to be private but that doesn’t necessarily mean that people can’t see your posts. Unlike Facebook, on Twitter all your tweets are visible and immediately in the public domain unless you have purposely set your profile to private; making it even easier for potential employers to find what you are talking about and what your views are.

DO – Think before you post

If you are worried about whether your posts will be seen as offensive or not, the general rule of thumb is that, if you wouldn’t want your Grandma to see it then you probably shouldn’t post it!

If you really can’t help yourself having the occasional rant on Facebook, our top tip would be to make your profile completely private so no one except your friends can see your posts. When retweeting and sharing posts, always be conscious that, although these are other people’s opinions, it can be seen as you endorsing them.

DON’T – Rant about work

Always think about what you are posting and don’t post anything negative about your current or future employer – just remember this story of a girl who got fired from her job before she even started because of one simple tweet.

There are also many public cases of workers getting fired because of something they wrote on Facebook, and of course, this works the same way as not being offered a job due to your social media activity.

Extra tip – on Twitter add “all views are my own” in to your bio.


LinkedIn is the best tool for you to utilise, especially when looking for a job. Your future employer will be looking at you on this channel to gain a good understanding of how you act in a professional environment.

DO – Keep it professional

In our opinion there is only one simple rule with LinkedIn – keep it professional! Treat your LinkedIn profile like a mini CV, show off all your achievements, experience and projects and let potential employers see you in that professional light – save the baby pictures for Facebook!

DON’T – Overly self-promote

It’s good to promote yourself, but when engaging with a conversation or status update, it is better to add value by expressing your personal opinions and inviting feedback rather than blatantly selling yourself and asking recruiters to view your CV. They are far more likely to notice you if you write and share quality content.

Extra tip – join groups relevant to your industry.

However you use social media when looking for a job it’s important to keep things up-to-date and as interesting as possible as more and more employers are placing a higher importance on these channels of communication.
