The Growth Of Online Job Advertising

In the last twenty years, the Internet has revolutionised the way we look for work. Online job advertising is now the number one way people find opportunities and secure new roles. As a result, job advertising sites have sprung up everywhere as both recruiters, recruitment agencies and companies leverage the benefits of online job advertising. New technologies have meant that those looking for job opportunities are finding it much easier to do their homework online, but it wasn’t always like that. Let’s take a look at how the Internet has changed the way we look for work over the years.

Print Advertising

Long before the advent of online job advertising, the main way in which candidates searched for jobs was via print media sources. Newspapers, industry periodicals and magazines formed the basic tools of job-hunting. It was the role of the reader to reach out and find out more, rather than an active recruitment search on the part of the employer.  While the use of print media in recruitment has declined hugely, it’s far from dead and still seen as a valuable tool used by recruiters as part of a wider integrated campaign that includes online and other forms of media.

As more and more employers discovered the power of the Internet when it came to promoting, marketing and advertising their services, it became very apparent that every business had to have a dedicated presence on the Internet to push their business. The logical progression of this was to create career pages within the company’s website to track down candidates for vacancies. Later, bigger companies developed whole websites dedicated to expanding their workforce or finding candidates with specialist skills. There were benefits for job hunters too. Now, to find out if there were any openings in a particular industry, candidates just had to log-on and check the websites of companies that they were interested in joining. While there, they had the added bonus of finding out all about the company, what benefits workers were offered and what the firm’s plans were for the future. Today, most companies are happy to accept CVs through their websites in order to build databases of prospective candidates for future vacancies. 

‘Searching’ For A Job

Similarly, search engines provided a new and easy way for job hunters to find work. Google, Bing, Yahoo! and others offered a way for candidates to search for work using specific keywords. It signalled the start of candidates taking a more proactive role in job seeking, searching down potential positions before a job was even advertised. During searches, specialised job seeking sites would also turn up in the results, offering new sources of jobs that could be accessed periodically in the search for employment. 

The Rise Of The Job Board

It was because of the popularity of using online search engines to find work that dedicated job sites were created. These sites were very much like their search engine forerunners, but solely dedicated to sharing job opportunities and career based information. These were to become huge businesses in themselves. Sites like Zoek and public service job search sites are now customised to offer fast track ways to seek out employment opportunities quickly and easily. 

The Growing Role Of Social Media

Social media are trending and both business as consumer are using it for information sharing and networking.

And the Internet hasn’t finished offering new ways of connecting employers and jobseekers. Some of the latest recruitment and job-finding tool has come via social media platforms, such as LinkedIn. More and more employers are looking to these social networks to find candidates with the skills and qualities they need in their businesses. A worrying trend for some is that social networking sites, such as Facebook, are also being used by employers to vet candidates and get an (often biased) idea of their personality prior to hiring. Since many of the individuals on LinkedIn are already in employment, many recruiters see the tool as an avenue for headhunting hard-to-find candidates.
