Sales can be a rewarding field to work in. There is often the opportunity to earn commission based on your performance and hiring is usually based on related experience and skills rather than academic qualifications. Unlike some other fields, Managers often consider applications from people with applicable experience, such as working as a shop assistant, making it easier on occasion to get your foot in the door of this great industry. Here are our top six skills which are essential for a sales job:
- Interpersonal Skills
A sales job involves frequently speaking to customers and potential customers on the telephone or meeting them in person, therefore being highly confident as well as personable are essential job skills. A good telephone manner is also a must.
- Customer Focus
It is also important that sales people understand their target audience and are able to listen and handle objections. In B2B (Business-to-Business) selling, sales representatives frequently manage accounts for long term clients that may rely on the product or service to run their business. Therefore the ability to develop relationships and look for opportunities to up sell and cross sell are vital job skills.
- Results Driven
Sales is a numbers game. As a sales representative you will be set regular targets which you will be expected to meet at a bare minimum. Being highly self-motivated and passionate about selling are essential job skills needed to succeed in this competitive world.
- Resilience and Persistence
In any sales job, especially if it involves cold calling, a certain amount of rejection will be involved. Although the process can be disheartening an essential sales job skill is to be resilient enough not to take these setbacks personally and stay focused on your wider goals. Sales representatives also need to be persistent enough to get put through to the right person, when gatekeepers like company secretaries stand in their way.
Sales representatives must be focused on their job and able to work at a fast pace. Poor time keeping is detrimental in a sales job, when you only have so many hours in a day to get someone on the phone.
- Relevant Knowledge
Some companies may look for people with relevant knowledge of their product and field. For example in a B2B business, they may require someone who has experience working in the customer’s field, so they understand their needs and requirements. Other roles may require specialist knowledge, for example if you are working for a publisher, an English Literature A-Level and a demonstrated love of reading may be required job skills.
