What Does A Recruiter Job Involve?
A job in recruitment combines so many different aspects of business. You will learn to develop skills in quite a few fields. Sales, marketing, communications, networking, business development… even social media and database management in today’s new digital age.
Sales & Marketing
The job of a recruiter is to help employers to find suitable staff to fill permanent and temporary jobs. They achieve this through several means, utilising the aforementioned skills and competencies. Part of the job of a recruiter is to attract companies to their agency (marketing) and persuade them to list their vacancies with your agency (sales). This will involve taking vacancy details from potential listing employers to create job adverts and listings. As a part of the sales side recruiters will often find themselves cold calling companies to generate new business (aspects of business development). When a company is listing a vacancy, it is up to the recruiter to negotiate their agency’s fees for recruiting a candidate to the role. This also plays into the communication skills which are needed in the role.
The flip-side of this is attracting candidates to register with the agency. This activity could be the responsibility of the recruiter at smaller agencies or completed by a marketing team in a larger agency. This could involve ‘warm calling’ potential candidates who have registered an interest in either your agency or a listed vacancy. For more specific, specialist or executive roles a recruiter may engage in headhunting talented candidates who may not currently be looking for a new role.
PR & Communications
Recruiters need to be able to effectively communicate with candidates, employers and internal stakeholders. When calling potential candidates, the recruiter needs to interview them and take both employment history and job search details from the candidate. The aim is to create a pool of talented individuals from which to choose candidates for future listings.
Later, if the recruiter is putting candidates forward for a specific role they (the recruiter) will often interview candidates over the phone or in person to screen and assess their suitability, creating a shortlist of candidates before employers ever see or interview them. To get ahead, a recruiter needs excellent interpersonal and communication skills to quickly build a rapport and long term relationship with stakeholders – employers, candidates and colleagues.
About the biggest part of a recruiter’s job is matching the right candidate to the right job. In order to do this, recruitment consultants need to build a business, one of client companies and one of talented candidates. Over time the recruiter will aim to build up a pool of each of these. To effectively develop their business a recruiter needs to have an excellent understanding of their clients – what they do, how they work and their company culture. At the same time they need to understand how candidates work and what they are looking for in a company’s culture and environment. They can then more effectively match client and candidate.
Such as most sales jobs, recruiters often have high targets for the number of companies and candidates they have to attract to the agency. Often the main target and aim for recruiters is to get the maximum number of people placed in roles each week. A job in recruitment is a high pressure job in a cut and thrust industry. But one which is dynamic, interesting, multi-disciplinary and very well paid at the same time. Recruiters build, develop and hone a very wide range of skills.
