Why Autumn Is The Best Season To Change Your Job

Published: Wednesday 23rd September 2015

Leave on trees and sun in autumn

Today is officially the first day of autumn. From today onwards, the days will get shorter. Having a job you enjoy will be a great help in getting you through these ‘dark times’. What else makes autumn a great season for a career change?

Have A Fresh Start
Now that the schools have started again and the leaves have started to drop, this could be a great time of year to consider a fresh start. Autumn and winter are generally good seasons to keep your head down and focus on gaining news skills because there tend to be fewer distractions to the working day than in spring or summer.

Play Into A Business’ Diary
When applying for jobs, you should always be aware of the business cycle affecting the industry you are looking to work in. At the start of the calendar year, many businesses plan ahead for the year. This often leads to an increase in hiring, in order to support new ideas and projects and to replace employees who have decided on a career change at the start of the year. During the second quarter, hiring tends to slow down as new employees settle in and employers wait to see what happens next. Over the summer, hiring is not yet picking up, as many employees and employers will take their annual leave. But autumn marks the start of the final quarter of the year. At this time, employers will have an idea of what they have achieved so far and what they would still like to achieve before the calendar year is over. During October, many employers refocus on hiring, particularly if they have a budget left for the year. In most cases, they will want to get new recruits in before the start of the holiday season.

Benefit From Seasonal Demand
Seasonal jobs are most in demand during the summer and winter months, but in order to land a job ahead of the Christmas holidays, now is the time to apply. Many stores need additional help for upcoming sales, such as Black Friday, or for the Christmas season. Industries such as manufacturing, distribution, and hospitality also tend to experience a spike in demand in the lead-up to Christmas.

Get sorted before the end of the year
Autumn is a great time to join a new company. Many businesses organise a range of social events over the winter months, particularly nearer to Christmas. This means you get to learn to basics and get to know all your colleagues quickly and you get to start the New Year all settled into your new job.
