According to figures from Gov.uk this time last year there were 454.9 thousand full-time teachers and 255.1 thousand full-time teaching assistants working in state-funded schools. With these numbers continuing to rise, why are people moving to jobs in education? It might be because teaching is the best job in the world.
Inspire the young
Being a teacher isn’t just about educating young people, it can also be about inspiring them. In the famous words of Whitney Houston; “I believe the children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way”. Cheesy or not, there is truth in these lyrics and for many young people school is the first step into the real world. We all remember that one teacher who helped us reach our dreams, why not aim to become that teacher for your pupils?
Become a role model
Being a teacher means you become the main point of contact for many young people who will come to you for advice and guidance. Becoming a role model and being able to help your pupils can give you a real purpose and reminds you why you love your job.
Enjoy the challenge
Getting pupils to engage can be difficult (especially if you have a classroom full of teenagers). It can be challenging enough just to get them to listen, let alone participate in discussions, but that’s part of the challenge of teaching. When you do get the participation you can’t be blamed for the overwhelming sense of pride you feel.
One thing is for sure that as a teacher you will be ‘down with the kids’. Do you know what YOLO stands for? Of course you do, you hear it almost every day! Not only will your vocabulary expand you will have fun doing it, being a teacher isn’t just about standing in front of a classroom, you can get the whole class involved in activities and express your creativity. Teaching isn’t just a job for you and school shouldn’t be a chore for pupils.
No day is ever the same
Quite simply, every day is different.
