We’ve all been there, you applied for a job you thought you were perfect for and the interview went well. Or so you thought, until the dreaded rejection call or email leaves you wondering what you did wrong and how you can improve next time. The prospective employer may volunteer the reasons why they are not going to offer you the job but all too often what they say will be fairly generic: you did well but they were looking for something a bit different; your experience is not quite what they are looking for…That’s not going to help very much as you prepare for your next interview.
Of course, you could have been close to securing the position and were just beaten to it by a better candidate but the reasons for rejection may be down to you, so think carefully: Did you prepare well enough for the interview? Did you research the company and make a note of the names of the key people, not least the person interviewing you?If we take it as read that you didn’t swear, smoke or tell risque jokes and that you dressed appropriately, what else might have put a prospective employer off?
One word answers are unhelpful but so is rambling on, mumbling or exhibiting a lack of knowledge. If you don’t know the answer to a question, explain that you’re not sure. Criticising a former boss is a no no and if you’re applying for a job where it’s likely you’d be expected to show a portfolio of work, did you remember to take it along. If you find you are consistently securing the interview but not the job it may be worth having a mock interview with a recruiter or a similarly qualified person.
Sometimes It’s Out Of Your Control
Sometimes though, however well your interview went, your chances of landing the job were always slim for reasons totally out of your control. Perhaps the job was always going to go to an insider and you were invited along to ‘make up the numbers’. Or, although it shouldn’t come into it, you may have been seen as having too much or too little experience, perhaps not a good fit with the existing employees. But don’t be too disheartened, some things (or jobs) are just not meant to be. Keep searching though, your perfect position could be just a click away.
