Reference: A3875Description: The School of Marine Science and Engineering combines 4 academic disciplines: Mechanical and Marine Engineering; Civil and Coastal Engineering; Marine Biology and Ocean Science. With 85 academic staff, 1800 undergraduates and 230 postgraduates, it is the largest university department of its kind in Europe.

The School has an international research profile in marine robotics, offshore renewable energy, composites and metallic materials, and coastal engineering, with access to excellent research facilities. The University's GBP 19M marine building, which opened in 2012, houses exceptional marine testing facilities within the state of the art wave tanks and a new full mission ship bridge simulator. The University also operates a High Performance Computing (HPC) cluster to support numerical modelling and CFD applications. These facilities are further to others within the School and Faculty that include the Advanced Composites Manufacturing Centre, the Electron Microscopy Centre, and the new Marine Station development at Coxside. Engineering research within the School is concentrated under the Centre for Advanced Engineering Systems and Interactions (CAESI) and includes the following research groups: Marine and Industrial Dynamic Analysis (MIDAS), Materials and Structures, and Composite Engineering.

The School is now looking to appoint an enthusiastic mechanical or marine engineering designer to join the Mechanical and Marine Engineering Subject Group. Among the school's accredited undergraduate programmes are BSc, BEng and MEng honours degrees in Marine Technology and Mechanical Engineering and MSc programmes in Marine Renewable Energy. Engineering Design is a central theme within these programmes, and emphasis is placed on application of the knowledge learnt in other modules (such as mathematics, structures, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, control, materials and manufacturing, etc.) in a practical design context. This is often done through themed engineering design projects - a recent example being the design & build of a human powered submarine to successfully compete in the European International Submarine Race (eISR). You will be expected to develop and drive such themed projects, maximising student engagement and generating publicity to showcase Plymouth University's engineering design expertise at a national and international level.

You will also be expected to contribute to teaching mechanical or marine engineering design at undergraduate and postgraduate level across the range of mechanical/marine engineering programmes. You will have industrial experience, gained through employment or at least consultancy, and have or be working towards a professional qualification (Chartered Engineer or equivalent). At Associate Professor (Reader) level, you will have a track record of attracting research funding and delivering internationally esteemed research output evidenced through publication and other indicators and at Lecturer level you will exhibit strong potential to develop your research career.
