Category: Academic | Department: Faculty of Infectious & Tropical Diseases | Closing Date: 20 Feb 2017 | We are seeking to appoint a Research Fellow to work on the LINK programme which aims to improve the use of data to inform decision making for malaria control in Africa.
The programme is led by LSHTM in partnership with the INFORM (Information for Malaria) team, based in Nairobi, Kenya. LSHTM brings expertise in public health, malaria epidemiology, health systems research, policy development and management to support the use of epidemiological profiles developed by the INFORM team, which has technical excellence in the compilation of malaria data from diverse sources and the application of geospatial techniques. Together, LSHTM and INFORM will build and support the use of epidemiological profiles to provide new insights into malaria and to enhance evidence-informed decision making for better malaria control.
The Research Fellow, based in London, will work full time on the programme and will examine the roles and responsibilities of organisations and individuals in the development of key national malaria documents. These will include National Malaria Control Programme (NMCP) members, research groups, implementing partners and donors. The Research Fellow will be supported to study of national priority setting processes for key malaria control interventions and their delivery strategies, including the use of data/evidence within the setting of the priorities.
The post holder will be required to undertake a document review, both published and unpublished, conduct interviews on the political economy for decision-making with stakeholders in a number of countries of sub-Saharan Africa, write up analyses of findings to inform project activities for academic publications and contribute to coding and analysis of the interviews
The Research Fellow will have an MSc degree or equivalent experience in a subject relevant to public health, health policy and/or evidence use. The post holder will need first-hand experience of operational research in Africa. Youwill have experience of involvement with national policy makers and programme implementers in endemic countries and an understanding of policy processes and/or the political economy of health issues in low income countries. In addition, the Research Fellow will have proven abilities to manage competing work priorities to meet deadlines, to write technical reports and to communicate complex issues orally. Fluency in English and French will be essential, as will a willingness to travel extensively.
The post is full-time and fixed term until 30 September 2018. The post is funded by DFID and is available immediately. The salary will be on the Academic pathways Grade 6 scale in the range £37,889 to £43,028 per annum (inclusive of London Weighting).The post will be subject to the LSHTM terms and conditions of service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 working days per year, pro rata for part time staff. In addition to this there are discretionary “Director's Days”. Membership of the Pension Scheme is available.
