The National Centre for Food Manufacturing requiresa Principal Lecturer to advance the development and uptake of robotics & automation for the food manufacturing sector, progressing a range of applied and earlier TRL (Technology Readiness Level) research and education activities at the NCFM, working extensively with technology providers, food manufacturers, academia and other stakeholders. It is clear that the Food Manufacturing sector is facing a perfect storm including Labour Shortages, the rising National Living Wage and cost of inputs across ingredients and energy and utilities along with increasing consumer and retailer pressures for service, quality, quantity and price. To unlock further operating margins and capacity the priority R&D area for the sector over the next 15 years will be Automation & Robotics and the post holder will play a leading role is supporting the industry in realising the potential of automation and building opportunities for NCFM in parallel.A satellite campus of the University of Lincoln, The National Centre for Food Manufacturing is a major resource for the UK's food industry with over 250 major companies accessing courses, technical services and research. Our clients include the major national and global food manufacturing businesses and leading supermarkets and we collaborate with many international partners and universities.The University aims to be an internationally renowned University for Agri-Tech and Food technologies. NCFM is central to the achievement of this strategic ambition both fuelling across University collaboration in research, employer engagement, educational practice and apprenticeship delivery.Principal Lecturers (Enterprise) lead in the development of activities (research, teaching and consultancy) focused on working in partnership with employers and practitioners.Working closely with colleagues this role holder will champion Food Industry focused Robotics & Automation research & development activities at the NCFM, plus associated integration and uptake support (including Business Engagement / Skills / Education agendas) for the Food Manufacturing Sector and associated supply chains. Whilst working across a range of initiatives this is a key role in the development of a “Robotics & Automation @ NCFM” brand which will become respected industry wide and further highlight NCFM as the “go to” place for such research & development, skills and services.The initiative fits perfectly within the NCFM's applied research and innovation agenda. This approach benefits from significant industry partnership and interdisciplinary research supported through collaboration with Schools both within the College of Science and across the University, along with academic partnerships with leading national and international institutions for the food manufacturing sector and engagement with stakeholders across funding and policy agendas.All of NCFM's students are employed in the food industry and study on a part-time basis, with distance learning supported by block release the platform for delivery. The post holder will deliver teaching and learning to students studying on NCFM's Higher Education provision (Higher and Degree Apprenticeships, Degrees and postgraduate provision) and on occasions, Apprenticeships and short courses. They will be committed to helping students learn and to the continued improvement in teaching practice and the student experience. As much of the delivery is by distance learning, strong IT skills are essential.The post holder will have a strong academic profile in research and teaching within the discipline and the ability to integrate a range of technologies and systems i.e. vision system, sensors, actuators and mechatronics. Interfacing with senior representatives from food businesses, retailers and the scientific community are key elements of the role and the post holder will therefore be very experienced in cross-academic and industry collaboration and working with senior representatives from industry.
