EBOLA VACCINE TRIALS

The Clinical Research Department within the Faculty of Infectious & Tropical Diseases is seeking to appoint a Lecturer/Senior Lecturer (Clinical or Non-Clinical) as an International Study Coordinator to coordinate a major project to evaluate a new vaccine against Ebola infection (the EBOVAC1 project).
The post-holder will be employed full-time as a staff member of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine within the Faculty of Infectious & Tropical Diseases. The successful applicant will have a post graduate qualification in epidemiology or a related field; proven expertise in the quality management of clinical trials related to infectious diseases and/or vaccines; experience in clinical/laboratory procedures in research and collaborative research involving human clinical, epidemiological or laboratory outcomes; proven skills and experience in multicentre research and experience in strategic planning and development.
This post provides an exciting opportunity to be involved in the EBOVAC1 project which comprises a set of clinical trials designed to evaluate the prime boost Ebola vaccine manufactured by Janssen Crucell. This includes participation in the first in-human studies of the prime boost vaccine for prevention of Ebola virus infection. The phase I safety trials will be conducted in 2-3 sites in East Africa and a phase III efficacy trial is planned for Ebola-affected country/countries in West Africa. The EBOVAC1 project is a collaboration between LSHTM, Janssen Crucell, University of Oxford, INSERM and collaborating sites in Africa, including MRC/UVRI in Uganda, KAVI in Kenya and the Mwanza Intervention Trials Unit in Tanzania. Sites in West Africa are under discussion. The post-holder will be required to contribute to the study design, to provide coordination between the sites, to supervise and guide site trial coordinators, to facilitate coordination between study sites in Africa and Europe, to coordinate the collection of data and samples in close collaboration with Janssen Crucell, to monitor recruitment and follow-up, to prepare progress reports, to monitor trial procedures including adverse event reporting, to contribute to teaching/lecturing at LSHTM and to help in the preparation of scientific reports and presentations. The successful applicant will be required to spend a significant proportion of their time in Africa including in Ebola-affected countries.
The post is available immediately and the contract duration will be for 18 months initially and may be extended for an additional period, subject to progress of the trial. The appointment will be made on LSHTM's Academic Pathway scale with a starting salary at Grade 7 (£43,312 - £49,582 per annum inclusive) or Grade 8 (£52,371 - £60,111 per annum inclusive) or on LSHTM's Clinical Salary scale (for those with relevant clinical qualifications please see section on clinical requirements in person specification) at Lecturer level (£33,597 - £56,495 per annum inclusive) or Senior Lecturer level (£52,462 - £73,261 inclusive per annum).
