About the job

Gateway Recovery Centre, located in Widnes, is a dynamic and proactive hospital supporting adults with complex mental health needs, to achieve their optimal level of recovery and independence to be able to lead personally satisfying and meaningful lives in the community. The hospital is expanding in spring 2019, with plans to open a specialised ward for males aged 65 years plus. With functional or organic mental health conditions, challenging behaviours, as well as additional conditions associated with older age, physical health needs and functional disabilities.

We will be accepting referrals from acute psychiatric ward, PICU's, Prisons and secure services. Some of the patients may have a forensic history and may be subject to hospital orders with or without restrictions.

This exciting development has created an opportunity, for a forward thinking, creative and engaging registered Social Worker to join an established Social Work team and will have clinical attachment to the new ward as a primary caseload.

The successful candidate will be one who is able to evidence a specialist interest in mental health care for older adults, will have demonstrable skills working with the Mental Health Act 1983 and the Mental Capacity Act 2005. A sound working knowledge of capacity, best interest, Deprivation of Liberty Safeguards, and forensic work. The successful candidate will be enthusiastic, willing to learn new skills and be an effective team player, with the patient at the heart of clinical practise.

Hours - 19 per week

Our Social Worker role involves:

  • Undertaking a comprehensive assessment of the patients social care needs with supervision
  • Ensuring an accurate holistic and up to date social history is available for each patient, which offers formulations and recommendations
  • When it is part of an agreed care plan focused casework with individual patients using a range of interventions under supervision
  • With the patients permission, initiate visits and maintain contact with patients families and/or significant others offering support, information and where relevant to the care plan joint family and patient sessions
  • Acting as an appropriate adult under Place and Criminal Evidence Act 1984
  • Practicing within the Adults at Risk Policy
  • Playing a co-coordinating role in the process of section 117 Mental Health Act 83 aftercare plans with with the relevant community agencies which meet the needs of the patient and takes full account of risk factors
  • Maintaining accurate and up to date records of social work input to the care plan including Section 117 Mental Health Act 1983 care planning and transfer summaries which reflect the patients views

To be successful as a Social Worker, you'll need:

  • BA/MA in Social Work, Diploma in Social Work, CQSW, CSS or other recognised qualification
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation
  • To be able to demonstrate ability to assess need and risk
  • To be able to demonstrate ability to manage a caseload
  • The ability to deal sensitively with stressful and distressing situations for patients, relatives and carers
  • Good berbal and written communication skills
  • The ability to assimilate complex information
  • Understanding of Anti-Discriminatory and Anti Oppressive Practice
  • Experience of working with people who have mental health problems
  • Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team in community or hospital setting
  • Working within the Care Programme Approach Framework
