With so many organisations operating in the UK, there are many executive jobs available to the right candidates. Executives help in the management of a business, dealing with issues regarding strategy, performance and risk. Specific executive roles include chief executive officer, chief financial officer and managing director. The specific responsibilities of an executive will often depend on the size of an organisation, with executives at smaller business often holding several positions.
The everyday duties of an executive will vary depending on your specific position and the size of an organisation. Communicating with people, both face-to-face and written, is required, as will the need to act diplomatically when bringing different groups together. You will also likely be involved in important financial matters, with your decisions having a very real impact on the business and its employees. Dealing with emergencies, motivating workers and communicating with individuals of varying levels will also feature heavily in such roles.
Whilst there is no standard route to becoming an executive, many have followed a similar route. This route to becoming an executive often involves gaining a university degree, working as a manager and then gaining a higher degree, most likely an MBA. Whilst this route is the most common, it is not the only one, with experience, personality and determination often equally important.
For many, becoming an executive is often the end game in terms of their career, particularly as it can take many years to become one. Prospects for executives come in terms of moving even higher up the ladder at an organisation or transferring to a larger business with more executive responsibilities and higher salary. Additional prospects for executives include their experiences and knowledge to start up their own business.
There are various advantages to being an executive, none less perhaps than the higher salary you can expect and of the course the respect that comes with such a position. Being an executive means that you will have much more autonomy and influence over issues, enabling you to make a real difference to an organisation’s culture and how it operates. You will also have much more flexibility regarding the hours you work and your daily routine, as well having regular opportunities to meet new and interesting people and learn new skills.
One of the biggest disadvantages of being an executive is the enormous responsibility that comes with the position, something that can become very stressful over time. As an executive you are expected to make important decisions, and therefore taking the blame if things go wrong. Furthermore, dealing with staff issues, redundancies and other such emergencies can also be very stressful for some people. Executives are also expected to always put the business first, often leading to large workloads and long hours. Extensive travel can also feature in such roles, which again can be off putting for some.
