Working in Human Resources (HR), you will be involved in a variety of tasks related to the effective use of staff in an organisation. This will include everything from ensuring new employees have relevant skills, education and experience, to ensuring adequate training opportunities are available for existing staff to optimise their performance and achieve your organisation’s aims. In recent years, HR has moved on from its image of being a merely supportive administrative role to that of being a key function central in driving a business forward.

HR duties are varied, with exact roles often dependent on the size and structure of a business. Day to day duties will usually involve recruiting, workforce planning, strategic management, staff training and employer/employee relations. Therefore, human resources positions will involve meeting people from lots of different backgrounds and levels, from new employees to company executives. If an organisation is large, you may be required to regularly visit different locations, including opportunities to work overseas.

Whilst HR has become a competitive job market to enter, there are still various routes you can take to enter this sector. Such access routes include graduate schemes and studying for a relevant degree or professional qualification. In terms of studying, apart from a degree in HR, other suitable degrees include business, management, psychology and social administration. For management-level positions, an accredited qualification from The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CPID) is often required. In terms of desirable traits for the role, business awareness, written and oral communications skills, the ability to influence and negotiate with others and a good working knowledge of UK employment law will be of benefit.

With human resources becoming increasingly influential and central to how a business operates, more and more HR and HR-related positions are now becoming available, with the industry expected to continue seeing steady growth. Solid career progression and regular salary increases are often available, particularly once you gain CIPD qualification and several years relevant experience. Salaries often begin at around £22,000, with this rising to anything up to £100,000 for senior posts such as HR director.

Human resources can be a rewarding career for various reasons. In addition to ample opportunities for career and personal development, the industry has little need for automation, making it stable in terms of long-term employability. Other benefits to working in HR include regular opportunities to meet and help people, working across different locations and sectors and being able to directly influence how a business treats its employees and operates in general.

Working in human resources can often be demanding, not only in terms of workload but also having to deal with people and personal issues. Listening and patience are a huge part of HR, as is having the ability to diplomatically deal with often sensitive issues and bring different groups of people together. Other cons of working in HR include the need to keep on top of new industry regulations, having to know almost everything about the company you work for and of course being able to put the feelings and needs of others above your own.
