Crewe is a large industrial town in the northwest of England. Situated ideally as a major trainline junction into other northern towns and cities, Crewe has a rich rail history dating back to 1843 and is one of the few towns named after a station, rather than the other way round. It is now a popular area for families as it has links to Manchester, Chester, Liverpool, and the south of England, meaning it offers residents good transport links to commute to work.

However, with a population of over 70,000, Crewe has a large economy of its own, with multiple opportunities for employment in and around the town, often via some very large companies. If this interests you, continue reading below.

Crewe, like many towns, has a high street with regular local amenities; butchers, restaurants, news agents and pubs which provide many locals with work. The town is also home to supermarkets such as Asda, Morrison’s and Tesco, with these employing hundreds of people.

The town also has a strong automotive economy, being home to car showrooms, factories and finance houses. Due to Crewe’s easy access to the surrounding countryside, many workers seek employment in the nearby villages of Sandbach, Nantwich and Alsager on local farms. This gives the area a healthy balance of town and countryside as you have the option to work manually, in an office or for yourself.

Crewe has seen huge developments in the last few years. It has also been noted as a transport hub for the proposed HS2 line, which will bring employment to the town, as well as offering easy access to Manchester and London in shorter travel times.

Crewe town centre was recently put forward to receive government funding that will see investment opportunities in the town centre increase. Due to the easy access of the town in the north west, Crewe is also a popular area to work for people out of town.

Perhaps most famously, Crewe is home to ‘Crewe Works’, a railway engineering site that employs over 1,000 people. Bentley also have a factory in the town that employs roughly 3,500 people. Crewe business park is also home to Barclays, Air Products, Whitby Morrison and Fujitsu that are all multinational corporations. Jobs in Crewe can also be found in the town’s two small shopping centres: the Victoria Centre and the Market Centre that are home to numerous household names including River Island, Argos, Iceland and Wilkinsons.
