KS3/4 Teacher (MLD/ASD) South East London Very well run SEN School £160 £210 per day Full Time Job September Start Permanent Contract Available
A well run and effective SEN school in South East London is seeking a specialist Maths teacher to teach at their KS3/4 school. The school has been hugely successful in terms of OfSTED (outstanding) outcomes and fund raising. The school is a positive place to work where challenging students do exist but where real worthwhile change is produced through hard work, a great team ethos and a supportive SLT. OfSTED praised the schools approach to individualised work programmes, the work done by staff to help those students who had gaps in their learning, the schools strong community spirit and the strong partnerships with students families the school is rated as Good with outstanding features.
I am seeking an experienced Maths teacher who is comfortable delivering the curriculum to autistic learners. Due to the nature of the school strong SEN skills. Whilst experience teaching in an SEN setting could be helpful the Headteacher encourages applicants with the right skills and experience from mainstream secondary school.
Classes range between 6 and 10 pupils and are supported by 5 TAs. You will be teaching pupils who range from entry level and GCSE Maths through to primary levels. The pupils have all been diagnosed as autistic which means that certain things are very important to the way they are taught. Routine is a big factor and you will need to incorporate a visual timetable into your lesson planning including clear demarcation of now and next activities. Pupils are sensitive to loud noises and can misread body language and facial expressions, this means that you will need to be mindful of how you present yourself in class.
Behaviour can on occasions be challenging however the school has excellent whole school policies as well as offering comprehensive induction and deescalation training to staff.
I have worked with the Head for nearly five years and she is a true inspiration. She is amazing at supporting and developing staff. She backs the staff to the hilt as she appreciates the challenges they face. The school is made up of a highly regarded staff team who believe every child deserves to be given the support, patience and confidence to achieve their potential.
