We are working with a Tier 1 global organisation who are currently recruiting for a SQL DBA to work in the Data Management team, among a group of highly skilled support and implementation staff who are responsible for the management, administration and delivery of all Data Management applications to the firm globally.

We have a contract SQL DBA opportunity (with high likelihood of extension) for an experienced SQL Database Administrator to work alongside two other SQL DBAs primarily undertaking a migration project moving databases from Windows 2008 to Windows 2012. SQL versions range from 2000 to 2016.

SQL DBA Accountabilities

The role primarily of the SQL DBA involves migration and upgrade (where appropriate) of SQL databases. There may also be some involvement in day to day service delivery, escalation, problem solving and implementation tasks working to ensure the availability of the firm's critical IT systems.

The SQL DBA will assist the team in providing a service to the business that conforms to the agreed targets, processes, procedures and guidelines, and is aligned with agreed Key Performance Indicators and judged to be ‘best practice'.

As the SQL DBA, they support of multiple technologies in the area of Data Management service delivery, to agreed service levels.

SQL DBA responsibilities and challenges

1 Approach

  • Demonstrate and promote a culture of Customer Service.
  • To consistently deliver excellence and constantly seek to improve.
  • Demonstrate and champion a professional, best-in-class approach to the proactive systems management and delivery of the SQL database systems.
  • Being the primary point of contact for the Data Management team in the Windows 2008 Migration Project
  • Migration of SQL databases from Windows 2008 to Windows 2012
  • Where appropriate, upgrade of SQL Databases as part of the migration
  • In addition to this, there may be some involvement in Business as Usual operation of the firm's SQL Server environment as follows:
  • Work with team members to provide second level technical support and vendor liaison with key suppliers.
  • Analyse problems and identify trends.
  • Handle issues to which you are assigned.
  • Work closely with all support teams with regards to the Problem Management process, assisting teams in resolving issues on behalf of the user base.
  • Ensure knowledge transfer activities are undertaken between the Data Management team and 1st line/other 2nd line teams.
  • Build up and maintain a high level of knowledge of the SQL Databases and maintain an appropriate support ‘knowledge-base'.
  • Involvement in team project and change activities and commitments.
  • Represent the team on projects, ensuring best practices and support elements are in scope.
  • Assist in the transition of projects to accepted support processes.
  • Assist in the review of changes and designs presented.
  • Develop and encourage effective communications processes across ISS.
  • Ensure documentation, standards, policies and procedures are maintained and adhered to.

2 Responsibilities

Main areas of responsibility will include:

  1. Ensuring the continued availability of applications to the firm globally.
  2. Systems monitoring, problem identification, analysis and resolution.
  3. Capacity management and planning.
  4. Configuration management.
  5. Monitoring and reporting of system availability and usage.
  6. Implementation of BAU and project upgrades to provide continuous improvement to the business.
  7. Participation in other projects on behalf of the team.

In addition to involvement in the project work, from time to time there may be a requirement to provide support in the following areas:
