Location: Salisbury

Salary: £33K-40K depending on experience

Hours: 37.5 hours over 5 days

Job type: There is scope to appoint to a part time position.

Our client is an NHS owned company that is dedicated to improving the lives of people with neurological conditions. It is the UK's leading developer, manufacturer and supplier of clinical Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) systems, also providing a large clinical FES service. Our client is based at the National Clinical FES Centre at Salisbury District Hospital.

They are looking to recruit a Mechanical Product Development Engineer to be part of the team developing new products in the field of Functional Electrical Stimulation

As part of the team, which has close links to the clinical service provided by our client, you will see directly the benefit to patients of the work that you are involved with. There is also opportunity for further clinical involvement if this is an area that interests you.

The post holder will be required to provide state of the art mechanical design solutions for products and systems under development (typically enclosures for body worn devices), as well as contribute to meeting the regulatory requirements for medical devices. As part of a small team you will be working closely with electronic development engineers and be involved in the development process for new and innovative products. There is scope to have involvement in other areas of the company beyond that of a mechanical design perspective.

Responsibilities of the Medical Product Development Engineer:

As part of the multidisciplinary team you will be expected to display a high level of competence while demonstrating a methodical structured approach to mechanical design. The freedom to act will only be constrained by the need to meet the specification and quality standards. Calling on your experience, you will be responsible for successful delivery of mechanical design solutions of nerve stimulators (and accessories), supporting the New Product Development (NPD) team to meet these goals. Interaction with other members of the company to develop innovative solutions to problems will be encouraged and supported from the highest level.

Requirements of the Medical Product Development Engineer:

  • A degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design or similar.
  • At least 3 years' experience of medical device design with a proven track record of abilities.
  • Able to demonstrate a number of mechanical medical device engineering projects developed as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • At least 3 years' experience of working in a highly regulated industry (Ideally under an ISO13485 quality system).
  • An in-depth understanding of what is involved when designing for manufacture.
  • Experience in SolidWorks® computer aided design (or similar).
  • Experience designing medical devices to specifications and standards.
  • Knowledge of the requirements of Safety for Medical Electrical Systems (IEC60601); risk management of medical devices (IEC14971); also desirable, Usability Engineering (IEC62366).
  • Good organisational, time management skills and ability to work individually and as part of a team.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy of work.
  • Excellent communication skills across all levels - approachable and diplomatic, respect for confidentiality essential.

Desirbale:

  • Mechanical design of neuromuscular stimulation systems
  • An understanding of the clinical use of functional electrical stimulation.
