About the role: RBG Kew is a world-class visitor attraction and a global leader in plant science. We host a rich programme of events running throughout the year which are designed to reach the widest possible audience, inspiring them through the beauty of the gardens and engaging them with our vital scientific work.  The Digital Experience team sits within the Marketing and Commercial Enterprise directorate - responsible for communicating and promoting our brand and message to the public, increasing visitor numbers, delivering a public programme of festivals and events and bringing in revenue through commercial partnerships and licensing. We are looking for an experienced User Interface/User Experience (UI/UX) Designer to join us on a short-term basis, working within the Digital Experience team but alongside colleagues from our Science and IT Directorates to champion a more user-centred design-based approach to the redevelopment of some of our science databases and services. These services are predominantly aimed at scientific audiences, who have different needs and expectations to our visitors/members. We have recently launched a redesigned kew.org and we hope to apply some of the design identity and patterns created for this to our other digital products and services.  You will need to work with our science and IT teams, using analytics and user research, to understand the needs of our users and how to design products and services that support them. Starting with low-fidelity sketches and wireframes and moving on to hi-fidelity interaction models and prototypes, before working with developers to build and release to a live environment. Where practical you will advocate for testing early, with real users from within the scientific community.  In this role you will be working directly with developers and scientists and will need to be able to confidently advocate for user needs and user experience. You will be supported by the Head of Digital Experience and in regular communication with our in-house UI Designer. At this time we do not have Product Managers for our science services, so you will need to persuade and negotiate with business owners, advocating on behalf of the user to those that may not have a user-centred or digital mindset. The post holder will support the end-to-end design process and will play an essential part in implementing improvements to our science services and proving the value of design even in a specialist-to-specialist context.  Ideally, we are looking for someone with experience in data visualisation and informatics. One of the products this role will be looking will likely use online mapping tools to illustrate globally important plant areas, so any experience in map design is advantageous.  Essential skills and experience  Educated to degree level or equivalent work experience Minimum of three years' experience working in UX or UI design role Experience with responsive web design, demonstrated through a strong work portfolio that demonstrates creative design thinking as well as a solid understanding of UI/UX best practice Experience in creating visual mockups using programs such as Sketch, Photoshop or Illustrator Experience preparing wireframes and interactive prototypes for new and existing products Sound understanding of HTML, CSS and JavaScript Experience in creating new products that meet user needs through simple-to-use interfaces Experience of liaising and working closely with internal and external agencies / stakeholders to implement designs Planning, developing and managing digital products through a user-centred design process  All candidates would be expected to share a portfolio demonstrating their breadth of their previous experience prior to interview selection. Security Clearance: BPSSCV Deadline: 3rd July 2019
