Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Neural Stem Cell Biology

Reference: A3938Description: A BBSRC-sponsored postdoctoral position for a highly motivated scientist is available in the laboratory of Dr. Claudia Barros at the Peninsula School of Medicine of Plymouth University, UK. Research work will focus on the identification and characterization of novel Neural Stem Cell (NSC) molecular identity markers using both Drosophila and mouse models. A variety of genetic, molecular biology, cellular and biochemical techniques will be employed, including state-of-the-art single-cell transcriptome analysis, gene loss and gain of function assays and confocal imaging. The work is expected to significantly contribute towards resolving the current molecular identity quest of different NSC types, a central question in stem cell biology with medical implications. The project is a collaboration initiative between Plymouth and Cambridge UK Universities, and the Scripps Research Institute (California, USA).

You must have a PhD in Neuroscience/Neurobiology or related area. Expertise in as many techniques listed above is desirable, and candidates with a strong background in genetics and neurobiology are particularly encouraged to apply. Furthermore, this position requires a candidate with good work ethics, analytical and organisational skills, ability to multitask and to collaborate well with lab members.

This post is a full-time position (37 hours/week). Funding is available for 3 years, but renewal for a second and third year is contingent on mutual agreement and satisfactory performance. The post will be based on our North Campus (Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry) near Plymouth City, which is in an attractive sea-side location close to dramatic countryside and some of Britain's most beautiful beaches. The successfully appointed candidate will be required to start from January 2015.
