This newly developed position is required to support the business with the smooth processing of projects from order receipt to dispatch. This will involve communication between all departments to ensure project schedules are maintained along with customer communication and management throughout the process. Particularly where there are cost or lead time topics to be discussed.

The Project Engineer will be required to:-

  • Attend handover meetings for new projects, produce minutes and assign actions where necessary. Milestone dates are often set during the handover and these include GA drawing issue date, client approval date, BOM issue date, manufacturing completion date, assembly / final inspection date and dispatch date. Stage payment milestone dates are also set. These are all entered into the Nav ERP system.

  • Produce project programmes for selected orders and ensure milestones are achieved. Monitor progress and take the appropriate action if dates start to slip .

  • Liaise with Sales and the Customer to ensure any outstanding technical issues are resolved in a timely manner

  • Managing the Customer where delays are as a result of changes to specification, this will also include an assessment of the changes and the potential extra costs/project delays. It will be necessary to involve Sales where additional cost need to be passed on in the form of a quotation and order amendment.

  • Liaise with Engineering to ensure design and BOM issues dates are adhered to

  • Liaise with Purchasing to ensure long lead purchased items are on schedule

  • Liaise with manufacturing contractors to ensure they meet their delivery commitments

  • Liaise with Production to ensure there are no issues during final assembly and testing

  • Liaise with the Accounts Department where issues arise with stage payments

  • Where a project includes site activities such as Mechanical/Electrical Installation and Commissioning these will need to be coordinated with Schenck Site Services and Engineers and the Client.

While the Project Engineer will be focused on the more complex projects it will be necessary to consider the impact of other machine orders which will be sharing the same supply chain.

Professional Skills

Given the requirements and importance of the position, experience in a similar or associated role is essential. A working knowledge of manufacturing bespoke machinery and material handling systems is a prerequisite for the role. The key elements are as follows:-

  • A good communicator
  • A proven track record in Project Engineering from receipt of Sales Order to handover to Customer
  • Able to manage a Customers expectations, in conjunction with the Sales department, while retaining commercial awareness and cost control
  • Understanding of mechanical design processes within a bespoke machinery business. These can vary from a complete new design to small variations of existing machine designs
  • Understanding of material handling projects which can include multiple machinery, transfer equipment and controls systems
  • Understanding the management of a manufacturing supply chain, in conjunction with the Production department, to ensure components are manufactured in a timely manner and at the required quality
  • Awareness of applicable legislation, Machinery Directive (CE and UK-CA marking), ATEX Directive and Pressure Equipment Directive
  • Use of ERP systems
  • Good balance between pragmatic and analytical approach
  • Good commercial understanding / awareness


The candidate should have an excellent level of education and experience within a manufacturing engineering environment.

  • Qualified in a Mechanical, Process or Production Engineering subject (Minimum HNC or equivalent)
  • Previous Project Engineering experience
