Role Overview

We seek a VP, Applications and Product Platforms to focus on critical parts of our GS&E Courseware product portfolio. The candidate should have experience of successfully developing and managing digital products and capabilities, leading teams (including off-shored teams), collaborating across a complex matrix structure and of implementing transformational change. As the VP for GS&E, The VP Applications and Product Platform, will report to the SVP GS&E Courseware and operate as part of the departmental leadership team.

You will lead teams that organize around customer needs, and design and develop products and capabilities that drive better learning experiences and outcomes, and delight our customers. Cross team collaboration, continuous reconfiguration of resourcing with flexible, adaptive structures organized around opportunity and a focus on driving revenue and margin are critical requirements for this role.

High Level Responsibilities

Development and delivery of the Global Product Strategy (digital first) focusing on content acquisition, development and curation to support the delivery of product propositions that capitalisation market and customer opportunities and meet learner needs and outcomes

Drive revenue and cost efficiencies through the creation and delivery of innovative content and content solutions across the GS&E Courseware product portfolio that meet / exceed market and learner requirements. This includes the implementation of content sharing and reuse programmes across GS&E to deliver the required quality standardisation and planned cost savings.

Enable content delivery in a range of formats to customers (print, digital, mobile). Ensure that content is designed to facilitate formative and in-course assessment with a flow of learner and assessment data to diagnose learning needs and drive personalised learning.

Co-creation, management and delivery of the product roadmap in collaboration with other members of the leadership team. Ensure the accurate application of product management methodologies (Agile, Product Lifecycle and other) including governance to prioritize product investment in line with strategic priorities across the portfolio and create efficiencies to improve return and deliver financial targets.

Act as a thought leader on content acquisition, development and curation, and how effective teaching and learning are facilitated through great content

Scout and acquire new content providers / content solutions that can align with product strategy and roadmap goals

Development and management of relationships with leading edge/critical content providers and other partners

Continuous improvement of content management / content development processes - thinking simpler, leaner and faster -to accelerate innovation and time to market

Provide inspirational, value-driven leadership to teams and vendors such that they develop and are confident and capable in execution

Promote a culture of partnership, teamwork and innovation

Role model executive leadership characteristics as part of the Global Product extended senior leadership team

Retire or reject content with insufficient validation or demand (for in market content).

Work closely with Product Management and Geography leaders to identify margin enhancing / additional revenue opportunities

Engage with Legal on audits and other legal issues that are author related.

Ensure compliance and vigilance best practice Editorial principles and guidelines, ensuring teams adhere to Pearson’s Editorial Policy. Sponsor the continued roll out and implementation of Pearson’s Editorial Policy globally across all markets and business units

Collaborate with Product Management leaders in GS&E Courseware and geography leaders to agree product release cycles

Monitor competitive trends in content and understand how content can deliver a competitive advantage for Pearson

Expected results:

Increased leverage of existing courseware content to maximise speed to market, cost efficiencies and product quality

Degree (or equivalent) preferred

Extensive product management and content development leadership experience

First class leadership skills; able to inspire and motivate teams around a continuously evolving agenda designed to delight our customers

Ability to balance strategic thinking/long term opportunities with operational focus

Deep understanding of the digital world and able to translate this into content strategy and development, team mindset and ways of working

Strong understanding of education and learning from a consumer viewpoint: ability to translate this into winning content acquisition and development strategies

Ability to develop strategic author and content provider relationships that enhance our content and Pearson’s ability to compete and win

Ability to develop and communicate a Global Content vision and strategy to engage and excite the organization as well as customers and learners

Relationship management skills and the ability to use them to drive value both within Pearson and externally

Effective commercial skills, including procurement, vendor management, business case development, cost tracking and using commercial metrics to drive effective product management.

Persuasive negotiator and influencer

Robust decision making - based on evidence and data

Strong commercial understanding: financially fluent and with a facility for data and its interpretation to commercial advantage
