Our Career Conversion program is an opportunity for those who have a prior degree in cognate or non cognate subjects, or relevant experience in the construction and engineering sector, to convert their skills via an accelerated programme to become proficient in Quantity Surveying. We've seen how effectively those from diverse academic backgrounds, such as degree qualifications in history, law, politics and maths, or previous trades such as plastering, joinery and electrical engineering, with the right opportunities and training, can successfully convert to Quantity Surveying, via our tailored accelerated development programmes. We believe first hand experience is the key and will ensure you are working at a practical level right from the off, supported by mentors and senior professionals to achieve your goals. **What is Quantity Surveying?** Quantity Surveyors are “highly trained professionals offering expert advice on construction costs” (Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS), 2013) Ultimately the role of a Quantity Surveyor is to provide financial support and contractual management to Clients on construction and engineering projects. For Surveyors at Solomons, this can include working with project teams to successfully deliver windfarms, power stations and transmission, petrochemical and pharmaceutical process engineering, highways, transport and utilities projects across the UK. Our people are guardians of the costs, timescales and quality on projects, ensuring effective project controls are in place to appropriately manage and monitor performance in these areas during both the procurement phases and the lifecycle of the project. Our clients expect us to maintain and manage cost and productivity data, analyse the impact of change events and advise on solutions to project issues and unplanned events. We are expected to advise on appropriate pricing models and contractual provisions to protect project margins and budgets, and to implement these effectively during the pressures and priorities of live projects. It is exciting to follow a large project through from a drawing on a sheet of paper to a fully functioning site. Each project presents its own problems to solve, its own challenges and risks, and the QS teams working on the project should be able to advise and consult with the Client on the best solutions and options available to them, to ensure successful and profitable completion. To get you to this level of proficiency will require tailored and focused study, to hone your strengths and develop the technical and professional skills required to become a valued project adviser to our clients. We have a number of flexible development routes available to suit specific backgrounds and experiences and are confident we can successfully bring candidates with the right approach and attitude, through our training programme to Chartered Status, via a fast track pathway. *“I have been an Intermediate Quantity Surveyor with Solomons for 7 months.
