Job Description
Who are we looking for?

We have an excellent opportunity for a Senior Research Software Engineer to collaborate with the world-leading researchers and technologists at Culham, joining a cutting edge engineering research team.

Joining a collaborative, inclusive and growing RSE team, you will contribute to our new STEP programme which will establish a pathway to supply net energy by the early 2040s.

Please be aware that as part of the interview process we will ask for a sample of some software that you have written (or open source software if unavailable) and a brief discussion of what you like and what you would improve.

What will you be responsible for?

-Act as an expert consultant in software engineering for Computer Aided Engineering, advising on projects, designing solutions and developing skills in others informally or via training.
-Manage and deliver a portfolio of projects to developing engineering related research and design software to ensure the aims are achieved with appropriate quality standards, timescales and costs and partners are kept informed.
-Build relationships with Engineering and Science groups to understand their software and computing needs and with internal and external partners to define future RSE projects and collaborations.
-Diagnose issues and design solutions considering full technical and human context.
-Help develop the team by shaping processes, developing services and mentoring colleagues to set high standards in quality, culture and practices.
-Lead initiatives to transform aspects of the wider software engineering culture and practice and contribute to training, policy, community building - within UKAEA and in relevant national & international engineering and/or RSE communities.

Essential skills, experience and competence required

-Degree in a STEM subject and PhD (or equivalent experience) working in computational engineering research environment in industry or academia.
-Significant experience developing and applying computer aided engineering software to solve engineering / physics problems in one or more of the following areas:
-thermal-structural; fatigue / failure analysis; electromagnetic; fluid flow; neutronics; magnetohydrodynamics; rigid / flexible multi-body simulation
-Experience of developing software in the area of design-simulation workflow automation software or digital twins for large complex systems.
-Experience of leading and managing software work including all lifecycle activities, applying and promoting good development practice
-Working knowledge of developing and deploying software on Linux and -Windows platforms in two or more of C++, C , Fortran and Python

Desirable skills, experience and competence

-Familiarity with writing plugins for free or commercial CAD and CAE software.
-Engineering data management, database design and administration.
-User interface design and web or GUI development.
-Supervising, mentoring or line managing others (either formally or informally) and interest in pursuing this further.
-Making best use of scientific computing platforms such as compute clusters, HPC facilities, cloud systems or alternative architectures.
-Chartered status
-PhD in relevant field
