Support Worker - Drummond Court - The Willows & Harmony House


£17,843 per annum + excellent benefits

So, what will I actually be doing?

As a Support Worker you will be expected to provide an outstanding level of care that will enormously contribute to the people we support, living a more comfortable, dignified, independent and happy life.

This will include:

·Personal care – helping people to get ready for the day and assisting with bathing, showering and using the bathroom.

·Administering medication, supporting with finances, helping out with house work, organising appointments and cooking delicious healthy meals.

·Excellent communication skills – an ability to be able to adapt your manner in how you speak to make the information understood by all of the people that you will be supporting.

We are currently recruiting for 2 houses – Harmony and Willows – at this supported living service which is made of 6 houses in total. In Harmony you will be supporting 7 individuals, 3 males and 4 females, and at Willows there are 5 individuals who you’ll be supporting, 1 female and 4 males. All of the people you will be supporting are aged between 20-70 years of age.

No two days will be the same and having a passion for communication would be a huge advantage. It is important that you are able to find creative ways to engage with the people you will be supporting to help remove barriers and empower the individual’s to learn new skills.

Each individual has their own personality, hobbies and interests that they enjoy. There is one gentleman in particular who has a passion for aircrafts, so he likes to go to open airshows when possible.

We put the people we support at the heart of Mencap and we make sure that they are as equally involved with the recruitment process as our recruitment team. We feel this is imperative in ensuring they receive a tailored and relevant service. We are only looking for committed people, as continuity and routine is essential for the people we support.

It is essential that you are calm and approachable, but possess the ability to be assertive when the situation requires. It is imperative to the individuals you will be supporting that you enable them to challenge themselves to progress and achieve their own personal goals.

All of the people we support have a learning disability and there are some with other health issues within the 2 houses such as: epilepsy, dementia, diabetes and there can be some very challenging behaviour.

An enhanced DBS will be required for each successful candidate, paid for by Mencap. (T&C’s apply)

Working hours

Flexibility is a must for this role as you will need to be available to work across various shifts including: days, evenings and weekends.

Shift times can vary from a 7am start through to a 10pm finish – you must be able to get to the service for your allocated start time. For this particular service, if you are a full time member of staff, you would be expected to work 2 in 3 weekends, 2 full weekends on followed by 1 full weekend off.

There is also a waking night shift at Harmony and Willows which is from 9:45pm-7:15am.

Please note: these shift patterns may differ slightly throughout Mencap services, nevertheless this would always be communicated in a timely manner.
