We???re getting ready to count on you.**??**

Have a positive impact on your local community, meet some brilliant people and learn new skills. As an interviewer within the 2019 census rehearsal team, you???ll enjoy a unique experience ??? and be part of making history.**??**

The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It aims to count everyone and will help to decide how services are planned and funded in your community. There???s no other survey that gives as much detail about us and our society.

To prepare for the next census in 2021, we???re holding a census rehearsal in Autumn 2019. This is a great opportunity to help us with this exercise and comes with flexible working hours, a role in your local community and the chance to meet all kinds of people. Best of all, you???ll be supporting the field force to get responses from households that will help make key decisions about your area. So, you???ll be making a lasting impact whilst having a fascinating experience.??

Your role

After the main census is carried out, we then conduct the census coverage survey (ccs). This helps us assess how well households have been counted in the census. We do this by listing the properties in a certain area and interviewing the residents, and you???ll have a vital part to play in the process.

As an interviewer, you???ll travel around a designated area and record the addresses of every property. You???ll then arrange to speak to the residents, returning at different times of the day if they???re not available. A professional attitude will be absolutely crucial ??? you need to win people???s trust and co-operation to ensure as many residents as possible take part in the ccs. You should also be ready to spend most of your time outdoors, working at least 60% of your hours during the evenings or at weekends.??

Your profile

Good people skills are very important. You???ll need to communicate clearly, build rapport and be professional whatever the situation. This takes motivation and resilience, as well as the confidence to deal with all kinds of people. You???ll also need the ability to follow instructions, write clearly and keep accurate records. Able to read maps and record details on a mobile device, you???ll be organised, proactive and able to work independently or in a team.

To make sure you???re well prepared for the role, we???ll provide a thorough induction and training.

This role also comes with some essential requirements. You should be:

  • Available during the ccs operational period (there will be restrictions on leave during this time)
  • Able to use a mobile phone
  • Prepared to undertake training if necessary
  • Prepared to travel within your area
  • Ready to travel long distances
  • Able to work flexible hours (Monday to Saturday, between 9am and 8.30pm, and Sundays and Bank Holidays, between 10am and 4pm)
  • Be available from 18 November 2019 until 12 December 2019
