Lead Specialist, Trade Support

Business Area: Nuveen Global Investment Operations

Position Summary:

The Investment Operations trade support role plays a critical role in Nuveen’s international growth, initially focused on fixed income. This position requires that the incumbent has a deep knowledge of operating procedures, trade flow/lifecycle, an understanding and acute awareness of key areas of risk and an ability to resolve issues in a timely and sensitive manner.

The candidate will work closely with the traders, client service and support all post trade activities, including, but not limited to, trade matching, confirmation, transmission and settlement. The successful candidate will bring experience, energy, an entrepreneurial spirit and the ability to navigate new opportunities/challenges to successfully grow the international business.

The team manages local market investments in over 60 EMEA & Developed countries for all of TIAA Investment’s & Nuveen Asset Management’s Public Fixed Income & Equity portfolios approximating $62 billion assets.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support Equity & Fixed Income trade matching, confirmation and settlements for all publicly traded funds

  • Work directly with IT or vendors to resolve any technical issues

  • Work directly with various global custodians, brokers, and corporate action teams to facilitate any extraordinary settlement issues

  • Coordinate data set-up for new markets

  • Coordinate and liaise with global custodian and legal/compliance on local market renewals and re-registrations

  • Continuous improvement mindset to capitalize on straight through processing, speed and accuracy of systems and procedures; communicate in functional teams to complete daily tasks, share market and systems knowledge, and preserve and grow strong trading relationships with internal / external customers.

  • Develop key metrics and SLAs; continued support and evolution of data

  • Create and maintain SOPs

  • Partner with US based settlements, portfolio accounting, corporate actions, pricing and valuation teams

  • Contribute to overall success of the Settlements team

  • Support all aspects of reporting; preparing broker activity reports, monitoring fail reports and directly working with the traders/counterparties to resolve, regulatory reporting

  • Error correction

Management/Leadership Responsibility:

Leadership across the team, with the potential to directly manage 1-2 employees. Work with the team Manager in developing training plans and assisting in yearend reviews.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Experience in:

  • Investment Management industry.

  • Experience in at least one of the following Financial Services Operations areas (Portfolio Accounting, Trading Operations, Settlements, Middle Office)

  • Experience with Fixed Income or Equity Settlements, specifically EMEA and Developed Markets

  • The Lead Specialist role has the ability to take on multiple complex issues at once and resolve these on their own with limited assistance.

  • This role should be able to independently identify and resolve problems as they arise.

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with an ability to understand complex workflows

  • Good understanding of operational risks and controls

  • Team player, detail oriented, able to multi-task and prioritize effectively

  • Self-starter with a high level of energy

Functional Knowledge:

  • Solid understanding of the lifecycle of a trade from execution to settlement and through reconciliation

  • Solid understanding of SWIFT messaging and format

  • Utilize trade flow and storage systems and trade processing systems effectively and efficiently to maximize productivity.

  • Understand the various market complexities in EMEA and Developed Markets

Business/Industry Knowledge:

  • Solid understanding of the lifecycle of a trade from execution to settlement

  • Experience working on a trade desk as a trader or in a support function

  • Solid understanding of various Investment Management products (Pension funds, Mutual funds, Separate accts)

  • Excellent in Excel including macros, vlookups, pivot tables and other advanced skills

  • Exceptional communication skills, written and verbal

  • Solid experience using SWIFT messaging and format

  • Complete working knowledge of Omgeo products (ALERT, CTM, OASYS)

  • Experience with Eagle Star Portfolio Accounting System

  • Experience with Bloomberg AIM and Charles River Investment Management Solution (CRD) (CRIMS)

  • Experience with BBH Infomediary

  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills with an ability to understand complex workflows

  • Complete understanding of operational risks and controls as well as identifying areas lacking controls and implementing new ones.

  • when liaising with Front office and Traders in Asset Management

  • Global Custodians and Execution Brokers

  • Middle Office, Legal, Compliance, and IT

  • Team player, detail oriented, able to multi-task and prioritize effectively

  • Comfortable interfacing with clients

  • Ability to address difficult issues and work under pressures in high stress environments
