The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It aims to count everyone and will help to decide how services are planned and funded in your community. There???s no other survey that gives as much detail about us and our society.

To prepare for the next census in 2021, we???re holding a census rehearsal in Autumn 2019. This is a great opportunity to help us with this exercise and comes with flexible working hours, a role in your local community and the chance to meet all kinds of people. Best of all, you???ll be supporting the field force to get responses from households that will help make key decisions about your area. So, you???ll be making a lasting impact whilst having a fascinating experience.

Your role

As a census officer, you???ll visit residents and encourage them to fill in their census questionnaires. It means you???ll be our main point of contact with the public and the face of the ONS. You therefore need to be professional and polite as well as persuasive and resilient: the more responses you get, the more accurate the census. Bear in mind that you???ll spend most of your time outdoors, in all kinds of weather. You???ll also work at least 60% of your hours in the evenings or at weekends.

Your profile

Good people skills are clearly very important. You???ll need to be able to communicate clearly, build rapport and remain professional whatever the situation. This takes motivation, patience and tenacity, as well as the confidence to deal with all kinds of people. Organised, proactive and able to work independently or in a team, you???ll be comfortable working outside and using a mobile phone.??

This role also comes with some essential requirements. You should be:

  • Be available from
    • 30 September 2019 until 14 November 2019, or
    • 14 October 2019 until 14 November 2019, or
    • 21 October 2019 until 14 November 2019
  • Able to use a mobile phone
  • Prepared to undertake training
  • Prepared to travel within your area
  • Ready to travel long distances
  • Able to work flexible hours (60% evenings and weekends)
