We’re looking for Social Workers to join our Disabled Children’s Service and work to improve the life chances of disabled children and young people in Devon.

We work with families who need extra help or specialist support to look after their children and keep them safe. We across the full range of statutory work, including assessment, child in need, child protection and looked after children, which means that you can support children across their journey and expand your practice knowledge and skills as a social worker.

We have opportunities available in:

  • South Devon, based at Lescaze Office, Totnes and Abbey Rise, Tavistock

  • Exeter, based at Capital Court, Exeter

  • Mid & East Devon, based at Capital Court, Exeter and Oaklands Court, Tiverton

Our career pathway

We have a clear career pathway aligned to the BASW Professional Capability Framework (PCF) for Social Workers, and have vacancies available at Social Worker (grade F) and Experienced Social Worker (grade G) level.

As a Social Worker, you will be provided with appropriate guidance from more experienced colleagues and your Team Manager to develop your practice and grow your confidence in your role. When you’re ready, you’ll have the opportunity to progress into an Experienced Social Worker role through assessment of a portfolio at a progression panel.

Experienced Social Workers handle more complex cases, and you will confidently carry out your duties to safeguard the wellbeing of Devon’s children. You may even support colleagues at the early stages of their social work career. Rest assured, we’ll help you to grow your career with us – whether you’re interested in going into management or staying in frontline practice as an Advanced Social Worker, we’ll support you.

We’ll assess your experience, skills and knowledge against the BASW PCF domains and determine your appointment to either the Social Worker (Grade F) or Experienced Social Worker level (Grade G).

About you

A social worker registered with Social Work England, you’ll need to have satisfactorily completed your Assessed and Supported Year in Employment (ASYE). We’re also looking for:

  • Previous experience working within social care, including working in a multi-agency and court environment

  • High-level written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to build effective professional relationships with children, families and other professionals.

  • Knowledge and understanding of the legislation, models and theories relevant to children’s social work

If your experience as a social worker is within another sector (such as Adult Social Care), then we can support you to transition into children and families social work through our six-month development programme, supported by our exceptional Social Work Academy.

What we can offer you

At Devon County Council, we have an exceptionally supportive management team that offer a good level of supervision so that you can critically reflect on your practice on a regular basis.

In recognition of the vital contribution you make, we offer an attractive package of benefits including:

  • Ongoing learning and development opportunities through our Social Work Academy

  • 22 days paid annual leave per year (rising with length of service), plus bank holidays and statutory days at Christmas

  • Access to our confidential Employee Assistance Programme to support you to balance the demands of everyday life – available 24/7

  • Flexible working opportunities, including part-time hours, flexitime and homeworking (subject to the needs of the role - please discuss at interview)

If you’re moving to Devon to join us, we may be able to offer you a generous relocation package – there’s never been a better time to make the move
