The Company

Our client is an established management company offering support services to optometrist practices. Their portfolio includes a number of practices giving them the buying power to enable maximisation of value to the patient.

They are currently looking for a mobile Optometrist to cover up to 5 days a week, potentially spread out as follows; 2 days Swanage, 1 to 2 days in Bridport & possibly 1 day in Dorchester. There will be occasional need for Saturday cover and holiday cover in Weymouth but there is no requirement for bank holidays, Sundays or late nights cover.

Role and Job Specification

The core responsibilities will involve;

  • Examining the eyes of patients of all ages to detect signs of injury, disease, abnormality and vision defects;
  • Checking for signs and symptoms of general health conditions (e.g. diabetes);
  • Communicating with patients to get detailed case histories;
  • Using specialist equipment for diagnosis and testing;
  • Issuing prescriptions for glasses and contact lenses;
  • Fitting and checking prescribed lenses in order to correct vision defects;
  • Offering advice and reassurance about vision-related matters;
  • Offering help and advice for patients choosing frames and lenses;
  • Giving advice to patients on the most appropriate contact lens for their requirements;
  • Take full and comprehensive measurements to enable the fitting and reproduction of the desired contact lens;
  • Instruct patients in wear and care of lenses
  • Carry out full and regular aftercare for patients and keep comprehensive records.
  • Maintaining a full and up to date knowledge of contact lens designs, materials and fitting techniques;
  • Writing referral notices to doctors;
  • Meeting sales targets with regard to selling glasses and contact lenses;
  • Undertaking continuing education and training (CET)

The company employs Dispensing Opticians, and therefore Optometrists are not required to dispense daily, they are however still expected to be able to understand the principles.

  • Taking frame and facial measurements to ensure correct fit and positioning;
  • Adjustment of finished spectacles to fit individual patients;
  • Advising patients on the use of low vision aids;
  • Advising patients when adjustments or repairs to spectacles are needed;
  • Carrying out minor repairs in practice;
  • Selecting, managing and ordering a range of optical products;
  • Ordering lenses from prescription houses;
  • Checking spectacles on delivery to ensure that they meet the required specifications;
  • Undertaking continuous education and training (CET);
  • Maintaining a full and up to date knowledge of lens designs and fitting techniques;
  • Maintaining a full and up to date knowledge of frame materials and design;
  • Meeting sales targets with regard to selling glasses and contact lenses;
  • Arranging and maintaining practice displays;
  • Liaising with sales representatives from vision care product suppliers;
  • Supervising and training trainee dispensing opticians;
  • Supervising and training other support staff as required;
  • Be conversant with and carry out as required all the duties of a receptionist and clinical assistant;
  • To work in an accurate and timely manner;
  • Other duties as may directed by the management

Optometrists are also required to be conversant with and therefore able to help out with reception where appropriate with the following activities:

  • Greeting patients and directing them to the right person
  • Answering queries
  • Answering calls and taking messages
  • Screening phone calls
  • Keeping the reception area tidy
  • Receipt and dispatch of courier parcels
  • Deal with queries from the public and customers
  • Organizing staff timetables
  • Maintaining the appointment book and scheduling appointments
  • General administration and clerical support
  • Receiving and sorting mail
  • Be Computer literate in Microsoft Word & Excel

Essential Skills & Requirements:

The role requires extensive use of technical expertise and excellent communication skills. They must be qualified by examination and registered by the General Optical Council.

Employment Details & Benefits

This is a 7.5 hours/day for4 to 5 days a week, potentially spread out as follows; 2 days Swanage, 1 to 2 days in Bridport & possibly 1 day in Dorchester. There will be occasional need for Saturday cover and holiday cover in Weymouth but there is no requirement for bank holidays, Sundays or late nights cover.

A competitive salary of up to £60,000.00 FTE is on offer for the right candidate.

The package will include:

  • Holiday for full time: 33 days which including bank holidays

  • Travel allowance dependant on individual's location
  • Modern equipment - Test Chart 2000, Topcon OCT
