The Trusts & Grants Fundraiser role is one of a number of new roles created as part of Teesside Hospice's recently agreed investment in fundraising to help us to deliver our strategic and operational ambitions in line with our three year plan.

The Trusts & Grants Fundraiser reports into our Head of Fundraising, Marketing & Communications and is responsible for developing our trust fundraising capability, investigating, researching and making approaches for new funding. You will use your excellent communication skills to develop our case for support and to complete impactful and professional applications.

To be successful in this role you will have experience of raising income from trusts, foundations and major grants (ideally within a hospice or healthcare context) together with excellent research, analytical, communication and relationship development skills. You will also be comfortable with working in a small team and with taking initiative and responsibility.


During the first 6 months, the successful candidate will be expected to establish themselves in the new role and develop our trust fundraising strategy with some early income generation. Post this establishment period an annual fundraising target will be proposed and agreed in line with our three year income generation plan.

We are looking for someone with great interpersonal and negotiation skills with a positive, creative and proactive approach. As well as excellent IT skills, you will need to be self•motivated and comfortable working to financial targets.


Raise an agreed income target from trusts, foundations and major grants within the year, taking personal responsibility for monitoring, recording and reporting on income performance.

Develop and maintain a long•term schedule for activity including applications, stewardship and reporting to ensure deadlines are met and relationships developed effectively.

Maintain records of the current live applications and report on the numbers and levels of applications each month.

Work to financial KPI’s and submit performance reports.

Develop, prepare and submit high quality funding applications to trusts in line with their requirements as part of the overall Teesside Hospice fundraising strategy and contribute to the achievement of the charity’s overall fundraising target.

Undertake targeted research to put the charity in the best possible position to secure trust support.

Ensure all funder reporting commitments are fulfilled to a high standard and within deadlines.

Keep abreast of the monitoring of projects to ensure that Teesside Hospice meets its obligations to funders and maximises the return on successful applications.

Collaborate with the Head of Fundraising, Marketing & Communications on developing a robust approach to impact measurement and reporting across all fundraising activities.

Ensure knowledge of GDPR and charity regulation remains up to date especially how it relates to trust fundraising, ensuring work is within the legal framework.

Use and help develop the charity’s CRM database effectively to support effective donor development.

Identify and research fundraising opportunities for Teesside Hospice.

Help build relationships with prospects that offer new funding opportunities for Teesside Hospice.

Maximise peer•to•peer potential through a range of networks, working with trustees and other members of the fundraising team to identify potential influencers and connections.

Monitor developments in trusts, foundations and major grants.

Assume responsibility for all current and potential trust donors to grow support for us and deliver bespoke stewardship plans.

Deliver a creative and personalised approach to donor recognition and appreciation.

The Trusts & Grants Fundraiser also has the responsibility for their own and others health and safety as outlined in the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other relevant health and safety legislation.

Have a thorough knowledge of the Company’s Risk, Health & Safety Policies and Procedures.

Keep the office environment clean, tidy and free from obstruction in line with the appropriate risk assessments.

Highlight any training needs that may affect themselves or others to their Manager.

Report all accidents, near miss incidents and hazards to the relevant people in a timely and constructive manner.

Identify any, health, safety and environment improvements to their Manager.

Ensure Risk Assessments are conducted in a timely manner and recorded appropriately.

Complete all required mandatory training in specified timeframes including Equality & Diversity, Information Governance, Health & Safety, Fire Training, Manual Handling and Infection Control.

Work within the guidance framework of the organisations lone working policy


The Trusts & Grants Fundraiser must understand fully the content of their job description and Job Competency Profile (JCP) to ensure a full understanding of the knowledge and skills required to effectively carry out their duties and responsibilities.

Participate actively in the company’s appraisal process.

Lead by example ensuring compliance to the Code of Conduct.

Devise and maintain office systems, including data management, record keeping and filing.

Maintain up•to•date information on the status of funding applications and to communicate this as appropriate


The Trusts & Grants Fundraiser must conduct themselves in a professional manner and deal with all prospects, supporters, colleagues, peers and patients with dignity and respect at all times.

Acknowledge support and donations and liaise with the Marketing Team to maximise PR opportunities

Adhere to the Code of Conduct at all times.

Participate and communicate in an open, honest and constructive manner at all times including external and internal meetings, briefings, appraisals etc.

Work closely with the wider clinical and fundraising teams.


The Trusts & Grants Fundraiser will act in a responsive manner to the needs of the clinical and fundraising portfolio.

Track progress of proposals, grants and trusts through the portfolio and provide feedback and impact reports.

Maintain contact with existing contacts to secure additional support.

Ensure a professional and value added service is provided at all times.

Report any concerns or possible improvements to their Manager.

Develop and maintain positive relationships with all employees, managers and stakeholders.

Respond to all queries in a timely manner.

Being involved in decision•making processes.

First point of contact for all Grants and Trusts support for people from both inside and outside the organisation.


The Trusts & Grants Fundraiser will contribute towards ensuring effective processes, governance and compliance practices are adhered to in fundraising activities and ensure there is strong focus on continuous learning, innovation and improvement.

Cultivate and progress a sustainable portfolio of high•value, strategically aligned Grants & Trusts to achieve agreed income targets.

Build relationships to convert new one off donors into longer term partners.

Liaise with the clinical teams to maximise income from Grants & Trusts across the income generation directorate.

Be responsible for the account management of all Grants & Trusts and provide the highest level of management.

Participate in regular fundraising meetings, reporting and liaising on ongoing projects and inputting into projects of other members of the team.

Represent the charity publicly when required.

Keep informed on market trends and developments in the Grants & Trusts sector.

Be aware of and adhere to the Institute of Fundraising Codes of Conduct and Codes of Best Practice.

Ensure that, via Grants & Trust fundraising, all opportunities are maximised to generate awareness and understanding of the charity and work that we do.

Perform any other duties in association with the above post that may be required.

Undertake further education as identified in the annual staff appraisal.


In depth knowledge of trust and foundation fundraising principles, legislation and procedures

Specialist in Grants & Trust applications

Working knowledge of data analysis and impacting reporting

Prior experience of and successful track record in raising income from a range of trusts, foundations and grant giving bodies

Experience of putting together successful funding applications

Demonstrable experience in writing successful proposals and reports

Managing a portfolio of trusts and foundations and creating pipelines/work plans

Ability to present persuasively to individuals and groups

Ability to conduct thorough and detailed research off and online

Experience of working collaboratively with internal and external contacts to deliver successful fundraising relationships

Strong ability to plan ahead and manage multiple priorities effectively
