We currently have an opportunity available within our highly innovative Integrated Transport Systems (ITS) area of the business, which specialises in the use of smart technology and systems for traffic signalling, traffic monitoring and enforcement cameras, variable message signs, access control systems, street lighting and ancillary roadside equipment. Colas has invested in developing the next generation of traffic solutions with the amazing potential of our Wattway solar panel road surface already being recognised – delivering more efficient and safer journeys for road users.
About the Role
We are seeking to appoint a Technical Support Engineer to provide in depth technical knowledge assistance and supervision to the ITS (VMS) business, associated ITS clients including Highways England, Highways England contractors, local authorities and Colas VMS/ITS suppliers.
You will be responsible for reviewing and gaining a comprehensive knowledge of all equipment and systems within the ITS (VMS) business, whilst evidencing your ability to retain this knowledge by delivering all the testing, commissioning and fault finding activities to the required standards. You’ll carry out detailed reviews of all technical documentation prior to final sign off and provide VMS training on both new and existing VMS equipment both in house and to external customers.
We’d expect you to proactively keep yourself and the ITS business up to date with ITS technology innovation and potential opportunities.
You’ll be responsible for overseeing the stock management of all equipment/components covered by extended warranties. Including regular liaison with associated RTMC’s, stock management, detailed record keeping, liaising with the ITS storeman in order to send and receive stock.
You will also:
* Support the ITS Operation Manager(s) in producing your HEA/NHSS 8 Sector Scheme portfolio.
* Supervise future ITS engineers and apprentice engineers.
* Responsible for being the technical frontline of the ITS business while ensuring that our established and potentially new client relationships are maintained and developed through your professional approach.
* Undertake risk assessments and method statement reviews for all works undertaken
* Ensure all activities are undertaken with due regard for the environment, to prevent pollution, comply with legal and corporate requirements and minimise environmental impact.
Ideally, you’ll have experience of working with Highways England and local authority clients and working with IP and RS485 feed equipment.
You should have a demonstrable track record of identifying faults, repairing and maintaining electronic equipment and be experienced and competent to work on electrical installations.
You’ll be resilient and able to solve problems while under pressure in the field and possess a deep customer centric delivery focus.
The role will be mainly in the internal environment but will regularly require working in external environments, specifically high speed roads, which include factors such as adverse weather and environmental conditions, the general public.
You will also:
* Have a minimum of HNC in Telecommunications or an Electrical/electronic professional qualification
* Site Supervisory safety training scheme (SSSTS) is desirable
* HEA/NHSS 8 Authorised Officer is desirable
* Hold a valid ECS/CSCS card
* Be G39 qualified.
* Be Fully IT literate to an intermediate capability of Microsoft applications.
* Hold a valid IPAF card
